TOPIC: Food??????

Food?????? 3 years, 3 months ago #22846

Does anyone think Oscars would like venison (deer meat) ???? I hunt and usually get a few deer. I was wondering if I could share my spoils with my aquatic pal.
Any thoughts????

my oscars are on high protein diet such as beef heart and pork spleen.
giving your oscar some portion of your catch won't harm them as long
as you do not give them the whole deer:laugh:
i was told that too much protein is also bad for the oscar so, i give
them vegetables too to make it balance. but before doing so.... i have
to starve them for two days before giving vegetables.

If I gave him the whole deer, I would'nt have any! HAHA! What kind of veggies do you give them?

they love cucumber most. sometimes frozen peas,
lettuce, occasional orange when i am eating them,
and the roots of my hydroponic plants.

Really!? That is good to know! Thanks brotha! DO you have to starve them before giving veggies? Could I just give him a couple frozen peas here and there or is it a big deal?

if you gave them those food from the start,
there would be no problem. however, if they
used to get pellets as main foods, it will take
time before they take other foods. that is why
members here usually recommends to give varied
foods so that they will not become choosy.

hello and welcome to the site.......i also get venison in VERY large quantities but dont feed my O,s ANY...it is low in fat but very high in protein,a small piece once a week is ok but i do not reccomend any more than that..you would do far better by giving them an eartworm if its protein you want but a good pellet food is the way to go ....hope this helps

I'm not sure that giving them this type of meat is a particularly good idea. It is thought that fish don't process saturated fat very well and it can lead to liver problems. That's why the only meat you will find at fish stores is beefheart very low in saturated fat.

However, I could be wrong, but isn't venison quite low in fat?

I think you are better off feeding your Oscars primarily on the good-quality pellet with other foods such as shrimp, insects as a supplement. You can also feed your Oscars on seafood. They will probably enjoy the small chunks of fish, even squid.

venison is VERY low in fat.....its probably the lowest fat meat available, but at £35 a kilo they probably wouldnt sell much at pet stores.....i still advise against feeding it tho

i doubt if oscar can get tired of those formulated foods.
in the wild, they will just get what is available specially
during hard times. just read the level to see what you are
giving to your oscar.
