yawning, sulking, and liplocking are regular characters
of an oscar..... darting, gasping, and not moving is a sign
of problem.

but during spawning, they will drive everything away from
their slate. very protective in a hulking manner....

My Oscars do yawn on occasions. There is a theory that it could be connected to high nitrates. However since my nitrates are quite low, my Oscars are not doing it for that reason. I think they probably do it to stretch their jaws. But at the end of the day, I'm only guessing.

i thought that when a oscar yawns it was to show other tank mates how big he is.. my 2 smaller ones dont do it but the larger one dose all the time!

I think when they open their mouths and flare their gills that is a sign that they are trying to show how big and strong they are. Mine don't yawn very often, but when I've seen them doing it, they aren't fighting or showing any aggression. Actually, I'm very lucky, the four Oscars I've got in my 300 gallon tank seem to get along really well.
