I wonder if anyone can help me, I have a 9 inch Yellow Oscar who seems to have a problem with one of her eyes, it has grown in size and is extruding from the side of her head, she seems alright in herself and is swiming around freely. Any information or assistance would be most helpful.
Regards.
Peter.

Is it blind? Do you have a picture you can post for us?
and we'll need your water levels before we can advise anything.
have you took a water test? if so, let us know your details.

It sounds like Popeye disease to me. First of all, what are your water readings? This disease is often brought on by poor water conditions. You need to test for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. Also, how often do you carry out water changes. Check the following link out, if you scroll down, there are a couple of medications that can treat this disease. Before you use any medication, you must make sure your water is in very good condition or it is very unlikely the medication will have any effect.

Peter. eyes usually protrude on both side. if it is one eye only.... then there must be a reason... maybe, one eye had damage before or yes, may be one eye had problem today.... whichever, we need picture to evaluate your concern.
welcome to the site

Gidday Paul.
She does not seem blind, she seems to be healthy and is eating normal.
Water Levels; PH 7.2, Nitrite just above normal, Ammonia just above normal & Nitrate 20PPM. I Also give my tank a 1/3 water per month and a full change once a year. Ive also enclosed a picture.

since zero is the norm for both amminia and nitrites anything above zero is not acceptable for oscars. as for changing only 1/3 water a month on your tank im sure myself and others would really like to know how you manage to get away with this. are you keeping a heavily planted tank or perhaps you are using a denitrator. also how big is your tank and how heavily stocked is it. i only ask because i do 40% water changes every week and i only have two oscar in a 150 gallon tank and this is to keep my nitrates at an acceptable level.
reguardless it sounds like popeye to me and it can be cured by using melafix and keeping your water in pristine condition.
however a pic would be very valueable to give you definite diagnosis.

Peter..
unfortunately, the readings you have given don't tell us anything. We need to know the exact readings. You have said your ammonia and nitrite is just above normal. That also doesn't mean anything. Ammonia and nitrite should be zero and no higher. If yours are higher than you have poor water conditions which could be the reason why your fish is the way it is at the moment. Also, you're not carrying out enough water changes. Could you tell us how big your tank is?
