TOPIC: feeding, medicating and water temp????

feeding, medicating and water temp???? 3 years, 3 months ago #23234

hope i got this in the right forum. well my oscar was gasping for air and has hith,he also did not want to eat his food anymore and moped around the tank!!

so i treated with "clout" and amazing he is breathing back to normal and looks for his food,( in only 2 days time) i have found him to "LOVE" beetles and potato bugs wow i would have never guessed (except some one on the site told me to try to feed him other kinds of food)i have also begun to give him black worms!

now hes tryed many other foods and doesnt want his pellets he looks and turns away, he knows there something better!!any suggestions on how to get him to eat his pellets again?

also now that i treated the tank the temp is at 74 is that fine or ? and the ph is at about 7.6 which is very high for my tank how is it for my oscar? everything is good, hopefully next week i will start treating for hith!! dont want to shock him.

glad you got the posting thing sorted i sent you a pm with a step by step on how to..........????????????? slowly take the temp up to 80 degrees old money this seems to raise their metabolism a bit and they eat better for me at a higher temp leave off the treats and only give them once a week feed the pellets for the other 6 days after a day or 2 your 0 will start taking them again once he realises thats his only choice!!!!! p.h. is good ...but whats CLOUT????????

Re:feeding, medicating and water temp???? 3 years, 3 months ago #23239

wow i've never had his temp that high only during the summer! his water temp changes with the season thats how ive had it since he was just half in big. i didnt know the ph could be that high? ps. "CLOUT is a med for ick and some other inf.
:parasites
:gasping for air
:rapid breathing
:flicking or scratching
:listless behavior
:excess mucus production
:flukes,ick,lernia
super good works within a day or two once you put in the water you imedia. see ick where ever it may be on the fish or plants ect.and clean up is easy after wards.

28 degree c ? that seems so hot. during the summer my tank gets 90 + and RAmbo wont even swim? so should i be keeping it much warmer than 74-76? all year?

28c is perfect for an oscar, sorry did you say you had other fish in there with the oscar?
if not, then 28 will be fine.
what i do is in the winter, i drop it down to 27-26 to give it the natural effect, but all year round i aim to keep it at 28c.
but before you change yours to 28c, please dont just change it overnight, do it slowly so it builds up over a few days or even a week, because sudden temp change can harm the fish.
good luck mate

welcome to the site!
the guys and gals had you covered.
i can only add, since you had just treated your fish with "CLOUT"
things, i believe you should not do it very often. any illness if
treated several times unnecessarily will become resistant to any
medication later. what i suggest is to just keep your water pristine
and feed with varied foods. your fish will be fine.

pH of 7 is the neutral level, 6 to 8 is the normal ranged that
oscar can thrive. however, sudden change is also stressful to
any fish. you need to know or establish or determine what is the
pH of your tap to be guided accordingly.

i started feeding varied food but then he decided that was better than the pellets:) go figure! my tap is about 8 for the ph but ive always thought that was to high? the water is always good, but as far as the meds should i not treat his hith or what do i8 do leave it and hope he doesnt get sicker? i dont want him to lose his eye!!!

Your PH is fine at 7.6 and would be more of a problem if you tried to change it. when you say your waters fine I take it that you are testing for-
Ammonia.
Nitrites.
Nitrates.
one of main reasons oscars suffer HITH is poor water quality. Nitrites been one factor. water changes on a regular base will help greatly with HITH. Heavy breathing, gasping is also a sign of poor water or lack of oxygen. can you post your test results please.

as already said 74 is a little low but an oscar can live in this temp. 78-80f or 28c is a very good temp for oscars.

ammonia 0
nitrites 0
nitrates 0
ph 7.4
i do water changes every other week as water looks good and i do a testing every couple days as it only takes about 10 15 min! i almost never have any changes in the testing and i change filter every week.
should i maybe invest in a heater?
and it has been about 4 days and my o will not eat anything once i gave him bugs and worms now he refuses to eat the pellets i did what some one on here told me to try him with other foods now look he sits in behind his bushes and WILL NOT eat his pellets!!! so starving him did not work today i gave him a bug and a beetle and he came right to me to eat as he normally had but not for a pellet?

please check..... you don't have to change the filter every week.... this could trigger water problem by loosing colony of good bacteria. moreover, it is impossible to get a reading of zero for nitrates for an established tank.
