hey guys...
i have a major problem that is starting to really concern me..
i have a Oscar fish he is about 7 months old and he continues to jump all day every day.. u can here him its like he is wanting to be fed!! anyways my tank has a glass lid and were the glass pannels sits is a glass rim and every time he jumps he hits it!!
now i have tried to lower the water but that makes him do it even more.. its like a target he has to hit it!! so the other day i noticed that he jumped and hit the glass rim and now he has a small gash on the side of his face the skin has come off and you can see his pink flesh.. now i am worried as its right near his gills.. he has not changed it has not affected him in any way he still being bossy and jumping and swimming around.
i am just more worried about it getting infected.. should i just get a different tank or try padding?? any help would be great!!
thanks
Beck

Jumping Oscars are common. i had one that left the tank while I was doing a water change. i don't think padding would work as the glass is a condensation cover so padding would become wet. most of the injuries should be miner and heal as long as your water is in good condition. i would try to make sure nothing of interest to the fish is left on top of the glass as they can see items left on the glass. be very careful when opening the cover or it may end up on the floor. the other thing I would do is when feeding only open a very small part just enough to get food in. this will stop them jumping at food time. lastly have you checked your water to make sure they are happy in there?? not shore if you have seen OFL's video "feeding time" i think its called, a young girl leans over to feed fish to be face with it coming up and jumping for the food)))) even he has this problem))))

You might want to make sure that your Oscar doesn't have any skin parasites. Fish sometimes jump to dislodge skin parasites so just have good look if you can.

It would also be a good idea to check your water conditions as toxins can make fish behave strangely.

Having said all of this it could be that you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Although my Oscars don't do it on a regular basis, it certainly isn't uncommon for Oscars to jump and hit the lid. I can't remember whether the videos is on this website, it's definitely on you Tube but I did film my Oscars a year or so ago following a fly that got him between the lid and the condensation cover. Oscars of the excellent eyesight and that is how they catch their food. So if they see something that is a potential meal just above the surface of the water, they're going to jump for it. People who keep arrowana will tell you exactly the same thing, these guys can leap and meat out of the water and grab insects off branches.
