I just purchased a 75 gallon tank from a guy who had a Pleco and an Oscar in the tank. The guy didnt want the fish so i took them with the tank hence, i am the proud owner of a couple of very cool fish. My question is this. i set the tank up in a high traffic area of the room. i thought i had done my homework on setting up for an Oscar and now i find out the dont like to be placed in high traffic areas of a room. Any insight i can get would be greatly appreciated. Am I just over reacting? Do these fish all hide alot?
Thanks,
Bill
PS I really like the little guy, he is alreadt about 4.5 inches long.

I had my O's in a high trafic area and they were fine. I have moved the tank to a less trafic area and they would hide when you walked up to them so I moved it back. (The men in my life love me!) LOL. I think it depends on the fish. And if you just brought it home it will take a few days for it to get used to you! GL

Thanks, I didnt think having it in a high traffic area was that big of deal. all the sites i checked out said nothing about aquarium placement just how the tank was decorated etc. The Oscar is doing well otherwise. What all do you feed your Oscar's??

I would find a way to aquascape so the Oscar has his safe hiding spot.

Keep in mind that even in a quiet room, your young Oscar is adapting to a change he/she didn't anticipate so is likely to be stressed. Hiding for a few days is usual behavior. Being young, the need for food might prompt him/her out sooner than an older Oscar.

Take your time and interact, let the Oscar become familiar with people around. Avoid sudden movements and loud noises if possible.

My Oscars usually don't run away from me and my daughter (she's 4 years old) since we spent some time around interacting with them.

Oscar are quite a true pet for being a fish.

Thanks, I have stuck to pellets so far but want to try some different things. He or she seems content. I just know I have read a lot on thier diets, behaviors etc. Have you been raising Oscars for a while? My other tank is a 75 gallon with malawi Chiclids..

in my 7 years of keeping an oscar, the tank is always on the high traffic area. if the fishes used to see a lot of people, they will not disturb anymore unless people keep tapping the glass tank every now and then.

today, my two tank is located at the port whereby passing people used to stop and watch my fishes. whenever i am the one who passed by, they wiggle their tails and beg for foods. Amazinggggggggg. i love it.

but be reminded, what work for me may not work for you. oscars have different characters and mood.
