TOPIC: number of oscars?

number of oscars? 4 years, 11 months ago #2888

well i just e mailed a chap with 4 full grown oscars for sale(2 pairs)and while talking to him he said he had 8 full grown oscars in a tank 6` x 2` x 2`???and he says hes had no real fighting(no more than the useal breeding type of stuff)
so is it possible to have more than one pair together like this as i dare not keep more than the one pair in a tank that size?

I wouldn't want to get into an argument with someone, but my opinion is that 6 x 2 x 2 tank is only big enough for two adults Oscars. That is the exact dimensions of my tank. I can't possibly see how you can keep eight adults Oscars without having water quality problems, even with really good filtration. However, if they think they can manage it, then who am I to argue, I just wouldn't attempt it myself, and I certainly wouldn't recommend keeping any more than two Oscars in a tank of this size. You really should be looking at something that is over 400 gallons

thats what i thought, maybe this is why hes asking so little for them as they surely would fight bein crammed in?the tank you have is the same as the size i use for a pair(just ordered another one for a new pair of oscars

A friend of mine works in a fish shop and they often get oscars taken back. They usually get taken back at 6 to 10 inches. He told me that when they only have a small number they can get grief but when the number gets to around 5 or 6 or more the grief seems to stop. I dont think this would be the case if they got a breeding pair or even worse 2 breeding pairs- grief is bound to happen then. They keep them in a 5 x 2 x2 tank but it is hooked up to a filter for most of the shop so water quality isnt a problem.
