slyfox1311 created the topic: Dwarf Oscar/ Short Bodied Oscar

Hi guys, I'm new to this Forum!

I'm just curious about this oscar fish that I just bought from one of the local fish breeder here in Jakarta, Indonesia. The breeder said that this oscar fish is crossed breed between oscar and other fish (I don't know what's the other fish, he won't tell me). He said that this fish can't grow more than 4 inch (10 cm). The appearance looks really similar with oscar fish it's just the body really short and round shape. I want to know what you guys think of it?

if breeding was done by hand (hand spawning) that is possible ... but if it was natural way...
i am doubtful about it. can you post a picture?

That's what I thought... The behavior of the fish is pretty much like parrot. They're not really that aggressive.

I somehow pity this creature. I actually do not really support hybrids.

Blood parrot cross, was my first thought too looking at the photos, but those can grow up to 8 inches, so that doesn't really explain the tiny, 4 inch size, unless they are stunted because of the cross. Are these fish able to mate themselves? Or are they as mules in the horse/donkey world. Hmm. Some hybridization occurs naturally, but these kind of frankenstein-fish kind of freak me out.

That said. Welcome to the forum!

Hey!
Well, I'm not sure about the mating, because I'm not sure if it's a male or female :)
Here's my other 2! The tiger albino one is 1/2 inch smaller than the other.

I doubt this is a cross or hybrid. The breeders selectively mate same species of fish with a specific a mutation/defect that can happen in any fish, in this case abnormal curved spine shape. Look at fancy goldfish, balloon mollies, balloon opaline gouramis, etc.

Blood parrots are made using red devils and synspillum cichlids who have a birth defect that causes abnormal curved spine shape . Here's an article that will provide history on the BP. (BPs do not originate from a cross with severums.)
