DedZefyr created the topic: Is My Female Oscar Stunted?

Before any of you get upset at me, I'm not the one that stunted her.

I have two oscars, Atlas and Wheatley, that live in a 125. Atlas is about 11 inches long, and Wheatley is about 6, but I got him about two months ago and he's growing still.
Atlas has not grown since I got her, and I want to know if she's stunted. I got her as a gift from a friend, that kept her in a 20 gallon for about six months before he gave her to me after my beloved P-Body committed suicide via jumping out of the back of his tank.

Help would be appreciated!

Hello again! At 11ins, the Oscar has reached the point where growth substantially slows, and although it may still grow some, it will be barely noticeable, even on a monthly basis. The 6 incher is still in the growth spurt stage, so you are able to see that easier.

Stress will affect how fast a fish grows. Under stressful situations (like being kept in a 20g too long), the cortisol levels are raised in the fish's body and that's where energy is spent rather than producing cells for growth. You'll know after 1 year of owning the oscar if it is truly stunted. Make sure that you test for nitrates using a liquid test, and keep it below 20ppm to ensure optimal growth.

Your tank size is good, provided they have it all to themselves. Keep the water clean, the food high quality and all should be very good.

I feed them Hikari Cichlid Gold, and PE Mysis and Bloodworm occasionally.

Good feed, a varied diet is best. I add a veg based pellet to all my cichlids diet, even my carnivorous Centrals. Try some raw veg and fruit pieces. Now, down to biz... lets see some pics and/or video of your tank and fish!
