So I find this kind of odd. I've never seen an oscar where the lateral lines simply are not there. Even when young they have them. My wild Marajo oscar, which I've had for 3 months, simply doesn't have the lateral lines that run from the gill plate down the back. Never really noticed this at first, didn't think this a big deal when I did since he functions fine. I'm guessing they are there but never grew through the scales. What are your opinions on this? Different physiology from living in a particular area? Or some kind of abnormality?

Just look under my older post "Wild Caught Marajo Oscar" in photographs and videos. Got a couple angles there, although he's a lot smaller. Just the small section on his left side, not complete, and nothing on his right. Nothing has changed, just his size.

All fish have a lateral line whether you can see it or not. The lateral line in a very important organ that enables them to sense things in their environment, like mammals use hearing.

Just for curiousity I looked at all my fish. 3 of 5 Oscars and Jag, the line is easily visible.2 Oscars show slightly. 10 other species of cichlid do not show at all.

Alright thanks for the reply guys. I was merely curious. I guess it would be impossible NOT to have them. Like us being born without ears lol.
