BruceAndSharkbait created the topic: Transparent Tips Of Fins

Hello, i'm not new to Oscar fish keeping but I am new to this website. I was wondering why there are somewhat transparent scales on the tips of my Oscars fins. My guess would be that this indicates new growth considering I changed their food recently to a high protein diet.
Thank you,

welcome to the community...

two things: most of the time, when fish are healthy, yes, white edges of the finnage and tail are new membrane, sign of growing...
however, sick fish may also ahve white edges on the finnage and tail as early sign of fin rot...
the difference is firm and translucent is good; cottongy and dull is fin rot

Hello and welcome to OFL. Be cautious with a high protein diet. Too high and too often is not needed, nor is good for Oscars. An omnivorous cichlid, Oscar does best with a varied diet, and a good helping of veg content keeps them balanced and regular. Could you tell us what exactly you are feeding? How big/how old are the fish? How about a look at them, we love Oscar pics and better still some video!
