Adult cichlids are not genetically engineered to eat every day. In the wild during dry/lean points of the season they will go several weeks with no food and survive just fine. They need time to properly digest and process any given meal. Oscars are notorious for begging for food. The "feed me" dance is a popular description. Its up to the responsible fishkeeper to ignore the begging. Give him a good meal, maybe 10 pellets, then let him run that thru the system before feeding again. What goes in must come out, and piling on without clearing will lead to intestinal problems. In your case, trying to make him grow by extra feeding may be more harmful. Stunting a cichlids growth means the skeleton is done expanding, but internal organs may still grow. A painful and gruesome death will ensue. Also consider that overfeeding leads to quicker decay of water quality. You dont need that either. Honestly, if I had your fish I would feed a quality meal only 3x a week.

Would you recommend a 50% water change twice a week or 75%

While in the 40g, the more the better. If you can get him into a 75-90, then you could do something like 80% once a week. Keep in mind that one large change is better than 2 of equal volume. 80 once a week is better than 2 40's. Re feed.. what exactly is he eating?

He's eating OMEGA ONE Natural Protein Formula. Super color cichlid pellets. She mixed it with dried blood worms.
The pellets are the small pellets not the large

How long is that 40 gal tank? It seems too small of an Oscar even stunted at that age. Besides the tank space it must have had really poor conditions. Best of luck!

The tank is 36 inches long. I know he need more foot space, but it will take some time for me to save the money for a new tank. I am disabled and living on a fixed income. But I'll get there.
