I was hoping to buy a new pre-made tank outright, so I can have a perfect Oscar friendly home for once.

But having been on leave the past two weeks, I've been doing some scanning of the shops everything seems to be hellishly expensive with the weak Rand (South African currency)

So just to ease my pain I'm been browsing our local Craigslist-clone, and just found this guy a few minutes ago...

http://img1.classistatic.com/cps/l/kj/09/5/13/404/r5/5084290_20.jpeg

Large Fish Tank For Sale + 2 Fish, one is a Cat Fish and the other one is an Oscar. Fish tank includes the pump, glass cleaner, and all the inside accessories.

R2700.00 negotiable

Now I hope it's not a mistake, and I hope it includes the cabinet, because as it stands there it looks quite sad but has a hell of a lot of potential.

The cabinet looks like wood as well, so should be able to sand it down and clean it up nicely if it is damaged.

And I hope that silly blue background isn't painted on.

I don't like the idea of taking over an adult Oscar (so it seems), because of their ties to their owners, but I would much rather take it over or hand it over to the local petshop I know looks after them very well, than see it bought and then abused by a non-Oscar lover.

The only problem is that I just spent R3200 on on tyres and brake pads for my Buell yesterday, and it went in for a service today, and had to stay overnight waiting for parts which will probably mean another R3000.

Not to mention I just sold my Wii Console and all the games with it for the equivalent of R4000, which was a blessing to be able to afford the above.

So this will be a major credit purchase, but I can't not go have a look at the very least.

I would sell the bike and get the fish.....

But that's just me.
People call me Donnie. I've got one Tiger O in a 55USG.

LOL
You can email him from Craigslist and ask all of your questions, if he really wants to sell it he'll answer you. Maybe you could rehome the O? How many do you have to begin with?

Well this isn't Craigslist, just a local version of the same kind of thing.

Phoned the guy, and going to have a look at 19:00 tonight.

Turns out the tank is 1,5m it looks a lot bigger though.

I don't have any O's at the moment, just the Malawi Mix tank.

My whole intention was to take it easy and sort a new tank when I have money, and sort the tank first and then get the fish later.

I will probably make a deal with the local petshop to house the two guys while I move the tank, and if they want put them up for sale while they look after them, in case anyone is interested otherwise I'll take them back when it's setup and cycled and all that.

You've got a plan which is a good thing. It's easier to cycle a tank with fish in it, maybe something small and cheap that the lfs would take back when you're ready to put what you really want in it.

if the tank is upa nd running now then it probably already has an established filter in it. if you do decide on getting it just keep the bio wet with tank water and when you get it home refill it and presto instant cycled tank.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

Well sadly it didn't turn out to be nearly as good as it looked in reality.

Cabinet is drilled to hell and back on the back and sides, making it look quite nasty.

Lighting was non-existent, and the no name brand canister filter sounded like it was on it's way out.

All in all I figured it would cost as much to get it to a level I like, as it would to just buy a brand new setup, so I will save my money for that rather.

A friend of mine might take it though, so all hope is not lost for the Oscar.

Yeah buying new makes that a lot easier of course, so I'll just save my money and buy when I'm ready.

I want to buy a pair of Oscars for an already established tank, not buy a tank for a pair of Oscars.

Thus I don't want to buy the first pair of Oscars I find, but rather the ones I really want.
