i have a sand bottom in my fish tank, but was wondering if shultz aquarium soil would be better cuz sand is a real hassle to clean rather have a acutal gravel then saND

Be aware that gravel will take a lot longer to clean then sand. Debris gets embedded in gravel whereas with sand, it tends to lay on top which both makes it easy to see, and much easier to remove rather than having to embed the gravel vac into your gravel and wait until the water clears.

I don't know why people seem to have problems cleaning sand, it is extremely easy, you've just got to be careful that you don't put your gravel vac too close to it or you will suck it up. Because the debris lays on top of the sand, there is no need to embed the gravel vac, the suction will lift the debris of the top.

i have a mixture and find it easy to use. as to cleaning, i
do it once every month using improvised vacuum... empty plastic
bottle of mineral water, 1 liter size, bottom cut, attached to a
garden hose.

i am not sure if anybody here take advantage of water current
inside the tank. all crap being driven towards the suction line,
goes out of tank as being filtered, and clean the filter media
once water flow is restricted. i do not have problem with pooh and
left over foods. i only vacuum the substrate because some waste are
being buried whenever the fishes dig and bulldoze it.
