We just made a batch of the homemade beef heart oscar food. Maybe we don't have the consistency quite right. It seems like it would "dissolve" in the water. Has anyone ever made this and do you have any advice? My second question is, do I need to thaw it before feeding it? Thanks so much. What a great site. Wish I had found it sooner!

Did you use the recipe from this site? If not check it out at www.oscarfishlover.com/index.php/Beef-he...ef-heart-recipe.html
I'm not the one to help you with this because I've never made it but I'm sure someone will come in soon with more info. I've been told that I can put frozen krill and shrimp in for my O's so I think maybe this would be ok too but don't take my word for it since it was a fish store salesman that told me
Welcome to the site, it's so good to have so many new people here, I hope you stick around !!

I don't really feed this type of food to my Oscars. But when I have done, I have bought beef heart from the fish shop, even the commercially available stuff seen to break up into little pieces when I put it in the water. I don't think you can avoid it because it has been minced, it is just little pieces compacted together.

It's probably a good idea to defrost it first. I'm not sure that's swallowing frozen pieces of meat will be very nice for the fish

OFL is right, they wouldn't take a bite off of a frozen piece, they'd swallow it whole....thanks for having my back Boss

i had an experiment for tilapia culture feeding raw beef
heart in parralel with frozen processed beef heart too.
in one tank that have egg crate divider, the one given
with raw slice beef heart grows faster than with frozen
processed beef heart.

i had done the same with pangasius, the tank getting with raw
pork spleen grows faster than the one getting frozen food.
