Hi guys,

i need a bit of help. as some of you know i did have 3 oscar fish (olly) who passed away (R.I.P)and it left us with 2 oscar fish.
now i have oscar who is about 6 months old at 7.5inch and ozmo who is about 4 months old and 5 inch. these 2 were very aggressive towards each other once olly died but over the last few weeks have started to get along and i noticed they are swimming side by side witch is great. question is we want to get a few more fish to add to the tank and we were thinking about chilards? questions are..
1. Is this a good idear?
2. Should they be around the same size of our oscar fish or is it to much of a risk getting babys about 1month old
3. if we do get new fish will it upset our other oscar fish they MIGHT be pairing?
4. is there any other fish we can get that the oscars wont get aggressive towards or eat!
and 5. our tank is 4ft x 3ft x 3ft is 2 oscar fish enough?

sorry i am new to the whole oscar fish and both my partner and i spent an hour in the fish shop trying to figer out what to do.. ended up leaving and thought i would see what you guys think since you all are very helpful
so any help or advice would be great
thanks bec

can you give your tank size and filter in use.
If your oscars are pairing off then any fish you add will upset things unless your tank is very very large. my guess is your tank isn't of a massive size so you need to ask yourself whats most important. the pairing group or more fish. if the 2 oscars are not pairing off then adding fish that are larger than 4" should do the job of preventing them from being eaten. this dose not mean they will all get along fine. you will only find this out by trying, also the type of fish you choose to add will affect the outcome. but your tank size is a important aspect.

Sorry missed the size at 1st.
your tank is around 224g then, what where you thinking of adding?

One over the back filter probably isn't going to do the job. At 224 gallon you would be much better off with a couple of canister filters. I highly recommend the Rena brand. If you read the box it will explain GPM (Gallons per minute) and you'll want at least double your tank size. Do you test your water often? Using liquid or strips to test?
If you can't beat them...arrange to have them beaten!

This link is on the homepage along with some other very helpful ones. My O's get along with everybody but I don't have any really long finned fish. I think that would be just too tempting for them

i test my water every day with the liquid test kit. do a water change of about 25% every 2 weeks.. since olly died i have been taking extra care of the tank and my 2 babys that are left!! oh thanks for the advice about the filter i will deffentley look in to it! the one i have at the moment is doing the job for the time being and the water is crystal clear most of the time but now the oscars are getting older and starting to decide to rearrange the tank its getting a little messy lol and thats when the filter seams to struggle!

For their size you'll be ok for a while but please start thinking about the canisters, their expensive but so well worth it.

Canisters would be your best bet however if you cannot afford canisters right away you can always double up your hob to compensate

I've purchased 2 Rena canister filters off of eBay. Good price but watch the shipping charges. I'd get a 5 for that size tank and leave the HOB filter in place.
