it is almost impossible to determine as oscars age by its size. there are too many factors to consider to give you an exact answer but generally speaking an oscar that is 6 inches in total length should be in the neibourhood of about 7 months or so.

i concur with cris.....
unless your oscar had been exposed to small tank that
could previously stunt its growth.

if the growth was stunt by controlled feeding, and the internal
organ is not yet damage, it has great chance of recovery, and
attain full size after several months. however, if internal organ
was already distorted due to small tank, it will no longer attain
full growth but still could be healthy though.

So,
I know its not possible to pin down an exact age, but if it takes about 7 months for the fish to reach 6", would you say it would take approx 14 months to double the size and reach a foot?
they are both getting 10-15 large hikari gold pellets a day each plus a few few cubes each of bloodworms per week.
or do they slow down there growth rate as they get older?
thanks.

if your oscar only reached 6 inches in length after 5 years then there was definetly an underlying problem with them. if you have more than one in a 90 gallon tank then the problem is probably one of overstocking.

as a general rule of thumb oscars will grow about 1 inch per month for the first 8-10 months or so then slow their growth as they reach maturity.

My Oscar grew quiet rapidly up untill he was about 8/9 inches and about 10 months old. He is still getting a bit more length but beefing up at the same time. When i say beefing up he is not fat just getting stockier and thicker. he is now just over 1 yr old.
