I just recieved a call from a lfs with the question of will I become their local oscar fish supplier... I only have a 90 gal. tank would this be an ok tank to breed them in and then move the hatchlings to a smaller 55 gal. tank?

and also I would have to sell "Spike" and my other fish to do so. this was I would only have the two oscars that breed in the tank..

What do you guys think.. should I try this????

Oh yeah the lfs has 7 stores in west michigan that I will be supplying.

Considering you only have one tank, that would be quite a commitment. Also, they couldn't just ring you up and ask you to supply some Oscars, it would all depend on whether or not they are ready to be sold.

If you want my opinion, I think that a lot to take on. Remember that you will have to nurture the Oscars and feed them properly, this will mean giving them live baby brine shrimp which you will have to breed yourself. Not difficult, but just another part of it.

yeah that is a good point and even then how many oscars will I go through before I find a pair that will breed.... I think that it would become a huge responsibility..

In the time that you'd need to find a breeding pair maybe you could get a bigger tank?
If you can't beat them...arrange to have them beaten!

I would like to do the same thing someday. I have 5 tanks in the fishroom, A 120g, 2-55g 2-30g, and a 10g, and I don't think I have enough to start breeding. I do have a pair( I hope) that may end up breeding(Tiger O's). I think your best bet is to hook up with Eddie at Bluegrass or one of the other large breeder/importers and raise juvie's, then get a growout tank, say a 150g or so. Not alot of profit but its fun!

I stopped by the lfs today and he will order 10 2in oscars of my choice and I will bring them home with me to let them pair off...once they pair then I will bring the rest of them back to the lfs.. then Hopefully I will have a male and female.

And yes Sins. that is my goal.. by the time they mature I hope to have invested in a larger tank... 150 gal. or more for the pair. then use the 90 gal for the younger O's.

Now I just need to decide what type or mix of oscars do I want to breed...
HHMMMMM.. any ideas. he said he can order any of them including wild

it depends on your direction. by becoming a breeder and a supplier,
you don't need to get rid of SPIKE. you will need it in breeding
process. however, by becoming breeder and supplier, you have to get
more tanks and more pairs.....and it requires time and commitment.

if that is not your goal, then breed as you go, on what you have, and
sell what you produce. this is just your hobby and be content with
it. This better than focusing your mind in breeding and be frustrated
when it fails.

yeah thats a good point I am just afraid that during the breeding process that Spike will get a lot of damage done to his/her's long beautiful fins. And yes I would just sell as I go with just the one tank. If it happens cool if not oh well

I would deffinetly offer them up to my fellow forum members before I sent them else where... I think that the two Lutino long fins from different types would make a beatiful O
