for the last day and a half my 2 fish have been hiding behind a log in the tank they don,t move much just hover on top of each other or beside each other i was worried at first that they were dead but if you touch them they will swim out into the tank for a couple of minutes and then go right back behind the log and just kind of hover again and not move they are 2 years old can anyone tell me what is going on

have you checked your water?
what are the perimeters
other pets are my colt (Freddo Frog), my staffy (Tank) and my boxer x,(Steph)

ammonia level is 5-6 ph is 8 nitrate is 40 the tank was set up a week and a half ago

you should do a water change asap to lower your ammonia. and you should consider doing daily water changes of at least 50% until it comes into check.

btw did you cycle your tank before adding your oscars to it?

i did let the water cycle for about a week and a half before i put them in i gave them feeder fish an sunday they didn't eat them and they have been in the tank ever since i was not sure if they were causing the proble but i just took them out

it takes longer than a week and half to cycle a tank.
and you shouldnt feed your O feeders as there is a risk of infection.

65 gallon tank, and they are about the size of an average womans hand

it takes forty days to cycle a tank. until this is achieved you will need to do water changes frequently to lower the toxins in your tank.

Without adding a cycled filter or old media with the good bacteria your tank will take anywhere from 45-50 days to cycle...

If in fact you are cycling with your oscars in that tank, you could end up in a serious mess. Do you have somewhere else for the fish to go? Can you take them back to the store? They will have serious health problems if left in an uncycled tank... How long have you had these fish?
