Is there a known ratio of males to females born? Are you more apt to get one sex over the other?

The reason I ask is it seems most adult o's you hear about are fighting males, or breeding pairs.. So I was curious. Thanks Guys and gals

the latest info from the breeder in my place says
hatching the eggs in different temperature has an
effect on sex orientation of hatchlings. i haven't
gone into details yet.

in tilapia culture, they prefer on all males since
they grow faster than all females.

No but I think my two big O's may both be female. I was just wondering.

I don't think there is a ratio its down to nature sorting it out. but I could be far wrong here its just my way of seeing things. I have one female the other I have no idea about. I thought it was a male but has never paired off so I am left wondering. they get on fine so i wounder if its a male that's infertile. again I am just guessing. i don't agree with bothering the fish just to find out, and to be honest it suits me fine. I have had Oscars that have paired off and they just become a pain to the other fish.

Eddie at Bluegrass told me if you got 6 juvie's, you could expect about an even number of male to females. Does that mean 50/50? Humans are differant, but I think its more like 55% females.Marcus, does annual water temp in the wild change the sex of offspring?

6 is a good number to start a breeding program but in no way would it guarantee that all would end up pairing or even more important will have a mate of the other sex. in the wild or even with captive breed fish if you net and remove 6 fish from a batch of 2000 and you were not in gods good books that day you could end up with 6 males. it is very unlikely and that's why 6 gives you a good chance of 1 or maybe 2 paired groups. after all when it comes to selecting, its not the 2000 fish making the choice its a human choosing the best looking fish. so that throws out the 50/50. As for the water temp having an effect on sex of the fish???? I do don't know. I cant see it would hold true cos if the weather was stable like in a captive tank you should end up with all one sex. that would mess up nature. this could be a really good question for the program mythbusters that's on TV.))))) I wounder what OFL thinks on this subject.))))

A wonderful response Marcus. That's what I have also been told. The 6 juvie's don't guarentee nothing more than 6 fish with some being females. Dosen't mean they will pair up.This is an excellent question and topic. Thanks for the response.
