I've just learned about the concept of old tank syndrome and I am looking into it. Is this something that I should be worried about for my oscar tank? How do I prevent this? edit: I ask this because I've read that even performing regular water changes won't be able to prevent this.. is this true?!

old tank syndrome is usually a result of poor tank maintenace. the best way to cure or prevent it is by doing water changes. this removes the toxins that create old tank syndrome and is also a preventative measure to assure that this syndrome doesnt affect your tank.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

my goal is simple a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all

old tank syndrome is basically poor tank maintenance.
when you put new fish in an old tank with bad water
parameters, it will just die gradually... and it worse
than new tank syndrome.

Oh ok. So proper tank maintenance means I don't need to worry about it

Side note, whenever I perform a water change, I let the python drain out at the rose bush in front of my house. the plant loves the nitrates

nitrogen is the main components of fertilizer, thus, your
plants will bloom. that is also the reason why i don't have
any fish problem without water change for 17 months. i just
happen to know that 2 years later after some research... i
am now practicing aquaponics.

How is your tank/plants set up? aquaponics seems like a neat idea.
