TOPIC: Howdy! New member with possible sick fish

Howdy! New member with possible sick fish 4 years, 8 months ago #4450

Howdy from Texas!

My name is Scott, and I've had this guy for about three years now. He's always seemed to be content, even though he's a bit grumpy from time to time. The issue is that he's got a big crick in his back:

I don't know a huge amount about fish other than their basic care. Should I be worried about this? He acts normal, except that he's a bit slow getting around the tank. His tail fin still flicks back and forth, so he's not paralyzed back there.

What do y'all think?

Difficult to say, could be just the deformity from birth. Crossbreeding can sometimes produce abnormal fish. However I don't think this would be the case with your Oscar. If he is healthy and eating, I shouldn't worry about it

Thank you for your advice! He's beautiful otherwise, and seems to be healthy enough, so I guess I won't worry about it and just love him for who he is.

I'm can't really tell from that picture exactly what sort of fish that is but it certainly looks like it could be a hybrid.

I've had a pleco for many years now that has two curves in it's spine. The fish actually has a cleft lip too! It's totally worthless for clearing it's glass.
Keeping fish is only as hard as you choose to make it.

I never actually bothered to look at the photographs that closely. However, you might just have a point about it being a hybrid, I have had a good look. It does rather look a little bit like a terror, although it's not quite the right colour. It could however just been the way the Oscar is in the photo. Oscar seem to be able to pull funny faces sometimes, or maybe it's just me.
