I'm afraid you're going to have to get your hands dirty if you want to clean your tank properly. Remember you've just got a large container full of water, it's not a natural environment where things get cleaned up naturally.
The only sure way of cleaning your substrate is to use a gravel vac. You certainly don't want to be introducing snails into your tank, they are nothing but a pain in the backside. Oscars are high maintenance fish, they create waste which needs removing on a regular basis.
OFL has given you some great nfo
To elaborate on what OFl is saying: you are creating a mini eco-system in your glass cube. Mother nature in healthy situations do all the work in Like. a lake or a river, it is cleansed with the help of mother nature. Your system gives mother nature limited ability to help you. The only help that is truly to your favor are the bacterias that build up in your tank when it has been cycled. There are good and bad bacteria. Think of it this way. what would happen if your trash man quit picking up your trash. You would end up waddling in waste. I don't know of any living criiter that would totally remove all the waste from your system, although some do aide in this procedure. If you are not able to maintain your system in a healthy manner, it will cost you alot of money and grief/ Just my 2 cents worth.
