I was over at one of the aquatic centres in my area today and they had an extremely large longfin tiger Oscar. A good 12 inches and built like the side of your house. They were only asking £12 for it. No names mentioned, other shops in the area would charge three times as much for this fish. Just wondering how much fish like this go for in shops in your area?.
I actually felt really sorry for this poor fellow. He was in quite a large tank with quite a few other fish. He was looking at me as if to say "please take me home" been thinking about him all evening. Very tempting, unfortunately got to be sensible, have already cut six red Oscars already. Got the big tank almost running but have other plans.

i have been searching for a 6 inch oscar or a tad bit smaller in my area. All the shops around only sale little 2-3 inch. I looked online and found a 6 inch tiger oscar for 9.98. Does that sound right to you? and if you do order online, how do they ship fish to your home without them guaranteeing there safety?

Suppose you United Kingdom? They've got just what you're looking for at one of the fish shops near me. Albinos, red and Tiger Oscars around 6 inches, maybe a little bit bigger.
Quite a few shops ship fish through the post. They use some kind of liquid oxygen that goes into the bags with the fish. They also put bags of hot water around them that keeps them warm for quite a while. A few years ago I bought two large clown loaches through the post and I've still got them.

My lfs has two 12'' red tigers going for $34.99. HIgh priced if you asked me, but they were extremely healthy. Another pet shop had an albino tiger with HITH for $9.99. I would have rescued him, but the only empty tank cycled I have going is a 10 gallon, and that's small even as a hospital tank, I've seen oscars bigger than a 10 gallon:lol:

I actually think it would be a very good idea to charge a lot of money for large Oscars. I think by doing this will only attract people who know how to look after the fish properly, rather than charging a pittance and then getting anybody buying them because they are so affordable.
However, I suppose you have to look at it from the shops point of view. Large fish take up a lot more space than small fish. Charging lots of money for them will certainly guarantee that they might be in the shop for quite a while. But then look at it another way, if the shop is not able to provide a suitable tankful large fish, they shouldn't even contemplate taking them on, or selling them as small fish. It is a difficult one, I would find it very difficult to turn the fish away if somebody came in with an Oscar that they couldn't do anything with.

I got my breeding pair for $35 for the two of them. They were about 7 inches when I got them. I always go to this little family owned LFS, and they will take fish that people can't keep anymore. Most of the oscars they have are in the 1-2 inch range, and cost between $8 - $14 depending on the breed. The only large ones they get are from people who can't keep them anymore.
I use this same store for most of my fish purchases. The owner is the type of guy who would rather loose a sale than sell you something your not prepaired to take care of. Or there have been times when I have gone in, and asked about a fish I saw, and he would say, he would hold it for me, but to wait because it hasn't been eating well, or something like that. He doesn't just want to sell it to you, he wants you to be happy with it.

Ill answer two questions raised in this forum.
1.Oscar(2,5inch) in New Zealand cost $30(nz dollar)
2.As for shipping fish these days theres a thing called "the 40hour heat pack" it seems to be some kind of a gell type pack that keeps right temp for 40hours generally they put this in the bottom of a styrefome/polestyrene container, bag the fish with an oxygen pill inside they bag that releases oxygen slowly over a period of time.
this is very safe as there is enough oxygen, heat, water ect to keep your fish happy for a while & im almost sure they put some product in the bag like stress zyme.
