Sad day

I have decided to give my albino oscar away. I got both a regular oscar and an albino oscar, both at the same time. The regular oscar is very aggressive, and won't let the albino oscar ever be in its sight. What's terrible is that the regular oscar HUNTS the albino down, even if the albino is hiding in a cave I made from arranging several rocks together. The albino gets hurt terribly because it would tend to scrape against the rocks in order to quickly flee. This has been going on for several months

Would it be wise to replace the albino oscar with something else, another fish (not necessarily an oscar) that can hold it's own against the aggressive oscar? I have a shoal (6x) of silver dollars, and the regular oscar tends to ignore them, or when it tries to bite them, the SD is too quick for it.

What should I do? Replace the albino with another fish after giving it away? This is a 125 US gallon tank.

So sorry to hear about this, I know it sucks... I think maybe a Jack Dempsey would be a good fit depending on how it would get along with the SD's... Just my Opinion!

Thank you for the recommendation!

Is there any way to assess a Jack Dempsey for its personality or aggressiveness when observing it at the petshop?

The same thing is happening in my tank but not quiet as bad. I have a tiger who is over 1yr old, i used to have 2 tiger that i brought at the same time but at about 8 months the started to fight real bad and i had to rehome one, i kept the more aggressive oscar. Since then i have upgraded to a lager tank and added a lutio which is about 2 inches smalled then my tiger. These 2 have been living together for about 3 or 4 month and they dont really get on, they have never hurt each other but are constantly squaring up to one and other with mouth open. They tend to stay at opposite ends of the tank and if they get to close to each other the square up toeach other, I guess i'll just wait and see if it get any wore and they actully hurt each other then i would have to rehome one.

If i were you i would rehome the more aggressive oscar and try adding a new oscar to your tank and hope they get on.

sorry to hear that.... i am just wondering how come that
my Glutton and OneEyeJack is geeting along well. they are now
8 inches and 6 inches while BlackStripe remain to be 14 inches.

Survivor and PinHole as well has no issue whatsoever. they
are now more than 6 inches both.

Is there any recommendation for a pair of fish (same type) that I could add to the tank? That way, the two fishes can be partners if the aggressive oscar decides to pick on one of them.

if your looking for another fish that will be able to handle an aggresssive oscar there are quite a few that fit the bill.
personally i would go recommend a freddy (Parachromis friedrichsthalli)
they do not grow overly large and can defend themselves easily against an oscar.
another choice in the yellow colour would be a male salvini(Cichlasoma salvini) again another that can handle himself from a larger cichlid.
if you prefer something in the blue or green colour your best bet then would be a texas cichlid(Herichthys cyanoguttatus or Herichthys carpintis) both would make a nice addition to your tank.

i would not recommend a breeding pair of any of the fish i have mentioned in your tank. only because aggresion from breeders could and probably would end up with fatalities with your oscar and sd's.

hope some of this helps

if they were to get a fish that is aggressive enough to handle the oscars then they wouldnt need to get a pair to gang up on the oscar.
personally im am not fond mixing africans and new world cichlids together so therfore the ideal choice would be convicts. but a breeding pair of cons can easily kill an oscar so single specimens seems to be the way to go.

Ok I will go with one fish. I need to find one that can hold its own against the oscar but won't kill the gentle and easy going silver dollars.

I just came across this "time-out" for bad behavior, where you net an oscar and let it be in the net's confined space for a bit in order to calm it down and remove aggression. Does this work?
