an Oscars natural habitat ranges from large lakes to slow moving waterways. So whereas you need to harness the power of the water coming out of your filtration system to create oxygen in the water, you don't want to create an environment where they're going to be constantly buffeted around in strong currents. It sounds as if you've got your tank setup just right.

Oscars are freshwater tropical fish and cannot live in salt water.

I know what they are, however I wonder if you slowly acclimated them to a low salinity if they would survive the change....I've heard of people doing this with other freshwater fish...Not sure why you would or even condoning trying

i don't have any scientific explanation but tilapia
is a fresh water carp but could thrive also in salt
water and brackish water. same is true with milk fish.

i also had tried oscar in salt water tank before but
eventually died after 8 months. the growth and color
was also good but died without any sign of trouble.

Some fish are able to live in both freshwater and salt, salmon, Mullet are two that come to mind. And did you know that flounder can live in fresh water as well?

I don't know the complete ins and outs but I believe freshwater fish slowly die of dehydration if they are kept in salt water, hence you not really noticing any external problems.

I suppose we must make it clear to anyone who is not clear that brackish water is not the same of seawater. Brackish Waters will not be far from the ocean

I don't understand why someone would experiment the theory of fresh to salt water fish... especially when studies have proven that it can be done but shortens the life span dramatically... I guess this would be no different than testing our drugs on animals.. I don't agree with it and I think it's inhumane.. Sorry about my strong opinion but why can't people in general just let animals live the way God intended them to...

I would have to agree with you. I can't see any valid reason why you would want to try and keep a freshwater fish in salt water.

Personally, I would take all the rapists and murderers in prison and use them for drug testing. However, that would be deemed to be inhumane, but it's okay to put rabbits, dogs, monkeys through agonising experiments and testing.

Seems a little bit hypocritical to me
