This is the sort of subject that makes my teeth itch. Believe me, I've had many a heated discussion about this on other forums. I've had quite a few Oscars and I have never had one that has showed any interest in so-called "toys". Whereas Oscars are probably one of the most intelligent fish you can own, they still have a very primitive brain. It just makes me laugh when people actually think Oscars are enjoying themselves, this is absolute rubbish and anyone who believes this is totally deluded, (hey, I feel like I am back on Oscarfish.com again, I upset a few people on there on occasions with my beliefs ) your Oscar may well show a curious interest in items such as ping-pong balls. Occasionally, you may come across an Oscar that will literally knock things around the tank all day, I think these sort of fish are far and few between though. I remember watching "you've been framed" this is one of these programmes where people send in their funny video clips. Anyway, this one Oscar would mark a ping-pong ball out of the tank every time the owner put it in, was quite funny. However, you have to ask yourself why the Oscar was doing it? Would it be fair to say that you could stress the fish out by continuing to put something in the tank that it didn't like?

Anyway, I've no interest in trying toys out with my Oscars, but don't let that stop you if you want. Some people use those little toy submarines and they say they are Oscar's chase them around, again this is properly aggression I would say. Some people put little holes in ping-pong balls so they think. Like I said, these are all things I have read, I have never tried them myself and never will.

If you want to put ping-pong balls in your tank, don't let what I've had to stop you. All the information on this website is given as advice and a guideline to keeping Oscars, I certainly don't claim to hold all the answers so experiment yourself with your Oscars, that's how you learn.

If you do put ping pong balls in your tank, dont attach string to them as it might get wrapped around your fish.

My opinion is that ping pong balls are unnecessary, humans might got nuts if they have nothing to do all day, oscars dont. In the wild they mostly look for food (unless they are full) and defend their territory. When full and no-one comes into their territory they will do nothing. As they dont need to look for food in a tank they will be quite happy to do nothing

Not trying to start anything here but I have a ping pong ball in with my O. I made holes in it so it sinks and he pushes it all over the place.

I don't consider it playing I consider it instinct because he tries to move everything else that's in the tank as well.

It is quite entertaining to watch him push the ball around or try to move the rocks or re-arrange his gravel. These are all things that O's do instinctively. It is not a sign of intelligence and they are definitely NOT playing but it is entertaining.
