My oscar is scared of my tank light. Whenever i flick it on my oscar will go and hide behind a stone. Why is it doing this? And also any tips on this as to train my oscar to be not scared of the light?

Some Oscars don't like the lights, their natural environment will probably be very dimly lit anyway.

I think the best thing you can do is put the lights on for 20 minutes to start off with and then gradually increase it day by day so he gets used to it.

This is a problem i have been asked about many times. I dont know why this should be as most farm bred Oscars should be used to lights. However you may get round this problem by trying a coloured perspex on top of your condensation tray changing the colour of the light. Try it and let us know if it works

That's interesting information, never heard it before. Has it actually worked with you? If so, I will put it on this website in the section where I mention lights

Its basically a color piece of plastic/film the goes over the see through plastic where your lamp goes, so instead of bright white light your oscars gets a more calming color - I would suggest blue. I never did it but my friend had bought some fish through an importer when the lights turned on they would either jump up at the top, bang the sides, or stress out on the bottom the blue sheet of plexi-glass worked for them. You can still see them but they are happy and it seems an happy oscaar is a much better pet - Jon

I would just put the light on and let them get used to it. i would put the light on a timer to come on at noon and go of at 10pm. Feed them early evening. I cant seem them still being like this after a week. Once they are used to it change the lighting times to about 4-8 hours a day
I can't get no sleep

I have never tried the coloured perspex myself as i have never had this problem however it does seem to be a common problem with Oscars. I have suggested this remedy to quite a few people and had positive feedback from several. Worth a try for a couple of quid.
