My oscars seem to be gasping for air and my nitrites are at 10...how do I get them to come down or should i just be patient and let the cycle complete. I have been doing 50% water changes in my tsnk everydsy for a week, and my tank is about 6 weeks old. It is an 80 gallon with three 2 inch oscars and one 5 inch. please help me

okay, we better off say that your tank is not big enough for four Oscars. At the moment they are still small but when they reach adulthood, your water will be very difficult to keep in good condition.

Okay, if your nitrite is indeed 10, then your fish should be dead by now. do you actually mean 1.0, or are you confusing nitrite with nitrate? Fish will breathe heavily if there are large amounts of toxins present. I would advise you to get a product called prime. This will neutralize ammonia and nitrite which is obviously good for your fish. Could you please get back to us and clarify the water conditions because I can't see your nitrite being as high as 10, I think you made a typo.

ok so I did a water change and they are down to 5.0...the ph is 7.8, the nitrates are 20 ppm. Thank you for your advice, as I am taking two Oscars out of this tank, and I will keep you updated, thanks again.

To give an update on my oscars. everyone is doing great and my tank is under control....I have recently purchased an UV sterilizer, and switched to RO water. The oscars are healthy and growing like crazy! Thanks for the help

nice to know your fishes are getting well. and you can gradually use normal
tap water in refilling the tank during water change but check first for the
toxin direct from the tap.
