Hi I was just wondering what peoples advice is on curing hole in the head. Currently i am using Octozin which is a 3day treatment, anyone else used it? Im keeping my tank as clean as possible and feeding vitamin soaked pellets. From how my Oscar is improving, it seems that i am on the right track. Any advice from any Oscar experts out there??

Never used any meds, but pristine waterquality, a varied diet and added Vit c allways is best.
Do you see any improvement yet?
Good luck!

I had HITH in an oscar once. I tried octozin but it was very expensive to treat a 100g tank and several treatments were needed. I was told to remove the fish to a smaller tank and treat that and leave the oscar in for 3 or 4 hours. After treatment the holes would become a red colour instead of the usual white. I treated like this several times and the HITH didnt get any better. The oscar hated it and would hide as soon as i went to the tank to catch him.

Octozin can help treat a bacteria associated with HITH but it doesnt cure HITH, good water quality is the best cure

seek the problem and cure that rather than ignore the problem and try to cure the result. By that I mean a lot of people get HITH cos poor water, usually cos they are over stock and can't maintain good conditions without daily water care.If you are not keeping your nitrates below 40pph wk after wk month after month you need a larger tank or less fish. if you are keeping your water pristine but are still suffering HITH then seek out what may be a cause of stress, bullying is a common factor. again it comes down to over crowding or choice of fish. select tank mates carefully. lastly HITH isn't clearly researched so we are not fully aware of all the factors that cause HITH. But if you don't maintain the points I have high-lighted above you are very likely to get HITH. It goes without saying that you should also be maintaining a good environment suitable for the fish you intend to keep. temperature, diet, lighting or lack of it, all should give your fish a quality environment close to what the fish comes from or at least suitable it can live in.

I am not saying you have not done all the above, and I am aware that some members have taken on rescued fish already with HITH, but i want to make clear to you and other readers just some of the reasons HITH is present in your fish. It don't need to be, i don't consider myself a expert but do have many yrs in fish keeping and none of my fish have HITH and are in genral good health.

lastly I would consider octozin as a treatment if you recieved the fish with the problem, I would use a small hospital tank as cost of octozin isn't cheap as delboybully also pointed out. if you recieved the fish in good health I would forget treatment and consider all the above first. Remove the cause is the treatment.

like Del has already mentioned, treating a large tank is not a cheap option, especially when it will cost you the best part of £20 for a three day treatment of octozin for a 125 gallon tank. Can you post some photos of the Oscar so we can see the extent of the disease. I'm a great believer of healing without medication. I very rarely use medication for any ailments that my fish develop. I normally just leave it alone and everything clears up by itself as my nitrate levels very rarely exceed 30 ppm at any given time.

I'm not even convinced that some of these hith off-the-shelf medications actually work that well. Anyway, you obviously getting some results, however it is debatable whether this is down to the medication or the fact that you are keeping your water in good condition.

A lot of food that you can buy contains all the vitamins your fish will require.

Well thanks for all the advice. I have treated the tank already with Octozin so ashame i didn't really need to. Im trying to keep the water quality as good as possible. As the weeks are going by he is seeming so much better. I think it was just the stress from the petshop tank that he was in and the non varied diet they feed them. Hopefully in another couple of weeks it'l all be gone. Thanks again.
