This is my first post On Oscarfishlover!

I plan on buying a Red Oscar.

I have a 4 foot 55(US)gallon . I bought 2 books on Oscars and they suggest this is the min that a single Oscar can live in. So i plan on keeping 1 oscar with no tank mates. I will feed him Hikari Cichlid Bio-Gold as his staple as well as normal Bio-Gold to switch things up. I will also feed him frozen krill and silversides as treats. For filters i will have two Aqua clear 50s as hang on the back filters and one eheim 2215 as a canister. I will also do one 20% water change weekly. The tank will be bare except for 4 rocks for him to hide behind.

Will this work at all long term?

sounds like you have a good plan on the tank so everything should be fine by what i hear,

Sounds like a good plan.
Just make sure you cycle your filter in the correct way.
It takes 40 days, but is worth the wait!
You may have to increase your volume of WC, when your O starts to grow.

It sounds like you have a great set up there. As Noddy pointed out, please make sure your tank and filters are fully cycled.

sounds good to me. always good to plan ahead. alot of people's first post on this forum (including my own) goes something like "so i bought this oscar... and something is wrong..."

That sounds exactly like my plan!!!!!!!!! I to have a 55 gallon tank with a single tiger oscar i got just not even 2 weeks ago right now its lovin its tank and getting to know me already they are so smart!!!!!!!!!!!!

If more people done things this way they wouldn't have so much trouble. well done for taking time to learn about how to take care of your new pet.

Sounds like a good plan but you might end up doing bigger water changes than 25% each week. Get yourself a water test kit, not the strips but the liquid bottle types. Test every week before a water change. If the nitrates go above 40 then either do bigger water changes or more frequent water changes. Most of us on here do 50% water changes

I picked up a 2.5 inch tiger oscar today after driving to 5 different stores and almost 250kms to find a healthy one. the selection was really bad for some reason.
