Blooper has grown up pretty well, it's now about 5 inches, maybe more and it has been healthy and living well, except for one thing I noticed the other day..

When you look at an oscars eye, you know how they protrude slightly from its head? The things holding its eyes.. Well I noticed that around where the eye base and the body meet, it looks as though the fishes gills are going through it with every breath. It doesn't look like pop eye though.. It's strange, I don't know how to describe it except as such. Whenever the fish gets excited and starts swimming fast, you can easily notice gills from behind the eye base, sorta popping out. I've never read anything about that and don't know how to fix it.

All the water tests have been good, every time I take them.. maybe they aren't working good and I need better testing kits. How do I get my fish to stop puffing its gills from behind its eyes!

Hope someone knows what I'm talking about, so I made this crudely crafted image from the website header to better show it.

I think that can't be the gills cause they're positioned more to the back.
I looked up this thread, could you see if this sounds familiar?

I have not seen anything like this either. Does it look like an injury? Hole in the head disease can affect around the eyes, if possible, please take a photo and post it.

After reading that, I'm still not sure. Really wish I had a working camera so I could take a picture of it.

It's strange, there is no membrane over the eye itself, it's all at the base of the eye bulge, and whenever the fish breaths, something that looks kinda like gills puffs out. Fish diseases are so bizzare.

Put if it is pop-eye, is it possible to medicate my tank without ruining the bacteria? This tank is probably just about done cycling and I don't want to have to start the process over again. Also, another question.. I have two filters rated for 60 gallon tanks, is it possible to have too much filtration? one is an Aquatech and the other is a Tetra filter.

On top of that, I have two long air stones... maybe the tank is too oxygenated? sounds strange, but I'm not sure.. could be causing that issue.

In an Oscar tank, there is no such thing as Over filtration! and I don't believe the air bars could be causing the problem either!

A picture would be very helpful!

Aggreed.
I've done some surgery on humans where we disect the inner eyelid, if it's protruding.
I've been looking for a vid of the same surgery done on Arowana, but can't find it anywhere.
I really don't know if Oscars can develop the same condition.

The eye surgery was for drop eye but why did they trim/ split the tail fin? I have never herd oscars getting DE either.

hi marcus... allegedly, splitting the tail would make the tail
wider when it healed up. you missed that thread when you were
out for a while....

I think it sounds like pop-eye. But you need to post a pic before we can say for sure.
Dont treat the tank until you find out exactly what it is

If it is pop-eye add an anti bacteria. I used Myxazin when i had a fish with it. Pop-eye is a bacterial infection that makes the eye pop out. The most common causes are poor water quality and fighting. Is it one eye or both. Do you have any tankmates. Do you test with the strip types or the bottles you have to shake up. The test strips can be very unreliable, and with the bottle types you need to follow the instructions exactly
