I have had cloudy water for days now and after daily water changes up to 50% its kind of getting better. I tried chemicals but it wasnt working so I just stuck with the water changes and its kind of working. I didn't add any fish or material all I did was change the filter cartridges but amonia, nitrite is 0 and nitrate is never over 20 so any clues on what could have happened to avoid this?

Hmmm. Make sure your not feeding to much and continue the high WC. Is it a new tank? I could be from stuff in the gravel. Do you have driftwood? Tannin from the driftwood makes tanks very cloudy, however it's not harmful to fish. Large WC will put it back in order.

Sometimes you can get some free swimming bacteria that are too small for the filter to catch. The net result is cloudy water. I have this once from overfeeding. I was advised by a friend to add interpet filter aid. Apparently it clumps them together so the filter can deal with them. After 1 day my water was crystal clear

I dont know if it will work for you seeing as you have been doing 50% water changes but it cant hurt

One other thing, have you added any bogwood recently as this will give the water a yellow tinge and it could be described as hazy. This tinge will last for quite a while

My water will go a little cloudy every 6 months or so, it usually means it's time to replace the hoses on the canister filter again.

I find the hoses are extremely hard to remove from the plastic inlet/ outlet pieces.(XP3 filter) Much easier to use a craft knife to cut them off. Plus, replacement hoses are only $7 at the hardware store.
