Hey everyone...just wanted to say thanks for all the help so far! I've learned alot just by reading all the posts on here. And its nice to find a place with a good group of people that don't make newbies like myself feel stupid for not knowing something like alot of boards out there!

So to my question...If I get two oscars would it be beneficial to purchase them from two different shops in town (there are 3 or 4 shops that carry them here) to avoid the possibility of the two I get being related? I just ask this because I didn't know if there would be problems if I did get two that were opposite sex and related and they ended up breeding down the line. Just a dumb question I thought of today at work.

in the wild, they could not choose whom they pair off...however, from fry to grown up,
they flock together, thus, possibly pairing with their own turf.....most lfs get their
supplies from one source...thus, there is no assurance that what they have is from
two different breeders....

just my thought....

Yeah, good point...didn't think of the fact that they are all probably coming from the same breeder anyway.

Do oscars tend to breed easily in the aquarium or are there certain condition you have to make happen for them to do so...don't really want to breed them just curious I guess.

my previous pair had laid eggs for several times... whenever they hatch,
the angel fish took care of them....no one survive except my survivor...

giving them enough space, good water condition and varied foods, female
tend to lay eggs even without male.. the eggs wont hatch at all. when
there is a male, it will fertilized the eggs but still no guarantee
to hatch.... hatching is a game of luck....spawning may take place upon
reaching the 14 to 18 months mark.

Ok...thanks. Guess it would be pretty cool to see them spawn even if they didn't hatch...Guess I'll just have to wait and see when they get to that age!
