TOPIC: Feeding oscar feeder fish?

Feeding oscar feeder fish? 2 years, 5 months ago #65155

I have:
55 gallon tank
950 gph worth of filteration
perfect water chemistry "almost" 10 nitrates
1 4-6 inch oscar only had him about 1-2 months grown him from 1 inch

My question is what is the best feeder fish i can give my oscar? I am only going to give him feeder fish once per a month as they have bad fatty acids and etc.

Ive heard guppys are best and they are the easiest for me to get?

I havent feed any feeders to my oscar yet i feed it mainly pellets and bloodworms.

Feeding feeders once per a month will not do long term damage right?

And im only feeding about 2-4 small feeders at a time per a month.

I would like my fish to hunt and exercise its muscles!

seams you already know the feeder fish isn't good food. yes guppies home breed will be the best option if you really want to use feeders. but then you could end up with another problem cos your oscar won't eat after and only accept feeders. if you want it to hunt have you tried live shrimp. much better food but again can contain disease in the water. remove all shop water and put them in a temporary container before feeding. 1 guppy a month will not do any real harm and will be more like real life of a oscar with some fish as food. live crickets make a very good food packed with proteins and also make good food for oscars. mix the diet for best results.

not to be evil but seeing how addicting it is to feed my oscar live fish. Is guppies every 2 weeks okay? Like just alittle of them 3-5?

anything in moderation will be fine.... what is important is to make sure
you have quarantine the feeders to avoid introducing problem in the tank.

First day my oscar just ate a live feeder fish. My guppies are homebreed by a friend with good water quality.

Suprizingly 10 secs after the guppy went into the water my oscar chased it and sucked it up like a vaccum cleaner and ate it in one bite and a couple chews lol.

For those of you that feed your fish live feeders like guppies or other livebearers how often doyou do it and how many at a time and is your fish fine?

grass shrimp, pellets, and beefheart is a regular diet alternately.
but from the time the wifey get that aro, she gave them a 100 or so
feeders a week 9one time dumping). feeding them regularly, feeders
were not consumed right away. i even see feeder's fries inside the tank,
on top of the filter pump.

since it applies to this topic...how easy is it to breed shrimp for an occasional treat for the Oscars?

and are grass shrimp similar to glass shrimp? I've seen glass shrimp quite a bit around here for sale.

when i goggled glass shrimp and grass shrimp, they are basically the same.
glass means almost transparent while grass shrimp has the same characteristics.

breeding???? i don't know if it worth doing it. 20 cents for one week feedings
won't be too much for me...so why breed?

we are million mile aways from each other...what is cheap here might be
expensive over there. my wife got an 8 inches silver aro for UD$10.40 only.
but for us, it is already expensive
