Hey, i had bought one oscar the other day as theyre a 40 dollar fish where im from but to my point he looks like possibly the other fish have beat up on him since hes the one fish in the tank and was wondering, since i really like the oscar and dont wanna see it hurt if it would harm the oscar to be put in a fish bowl for a while to recover without the other fish bothering it, as i dont have the money to buy one of those things that go in the tank. any help would be greatly apprieated.

Hun, Hi and welcome...

What other fish are in the tank? How big is the tank?

We will help you as much as possible, but please DO NOT PUT YOUR OSCAR IN A FISH BOWL!!!

Fish bowl? How big is it and how big is the fish? What other fish do you have that are bullying him? Maybe find a seperate tank to put him in despite the cost, Fish bowl dosn't sound good even if he is small! Make me think of the Betta bowls...

I'm not sure how big the Oscar is but I can tell you that tank is too small for all those fish. We'll see what the experts on here say but one thing will be - upgrade fast!!

OK, Hun... I hate to tell you this but you need to take the Oscar back to the store.

Oscars require a MINIMUM of 55 gallons by them selves. That tank can not handle the amount of waste that an Oscar puts off... They are VERY messy. These fish also require a HUGE filter system.

You either need to take him back, or find a 125 gallon aquarium NOW!!!

I am so sorry.

X2...way too small of a tank for all those fish...that isn't even big enough for one oscar alone...might have to look at upgrading soon!

Oh and welcome to the site...everyone here has a lot of experience and can help you though anything!

i was told at the fish store i go to that you go by if your fish is 2 inches long it needs 2 gallons of water both sharks would take up to 4 gallons 2 kissing fish would be 2 gallons parrot would be 2 gallons and sucker fish would be 2 gallons so that equals out to 10 gallons, or was i lied to by the fish store, also my oscar is MAYBE 2 inches long

that rule doesn't always apply...oscars are very large bodied fish and require a lot more space than the 1" to 1 gallon rule. A 55 gallon tank would be the bare minimum size for one oscar but even that is on the small side.

You have to take volume of the body into account also which that rule doesn't account for...I really wish people at the pet stores would stop using that rule because its pretty much useless.

And I agree with Nickisue...the best thing would be to bring it back since you don't have to room...sorry to tell you that but its best for the oscar and the other fish.

That may be true for other fish but not for Oscars... I have 2 babies that are 4" right now.. they are in a little 29 gal and I am fighting water quality problems because of the POOP that they put out on a daily basis. I have a new 120 gal being set up right now.

One thing I have learned... half of the fish store employees work there for a paycheck not for the health of your Oscars. The other half think they know about Oscars but most don't even have a fish tank! Sounds mean but it is true...
