I have never actually breed feeder fish because I just don't think it's worth all the hassle when there are plenty of healthy food available at the fish store. However I did keep guppies a few years ago and they bred by themselves, all you need is a male and a female. Unlike Oscars, you can tell the difference between the male and the female guppy. You probably need more than one breeding pair because it would take a few weeks before the young would be big enough to even make a worthwhile meal for an Oscar.

However, if you want my advice, don't bother, it just ain't worth it at the end of the day.

breeding your own guppies? for what? pets? or feeders?
for pets, you need the same care and parameters with that of an oscar or any other fish.
but for feeders, the long wait for them to grow will make you restless, and eventually
throw them in your o's tank before they can reproduce... so why breed... just buy and
quarantine them before giving them to your o. that would give you no hassle at all.

my aunt used to breed these in a 100 gallon tank to feed pacu, she started with 10 of them... she had about 500 or so in the tank when they finally took it down. just add guppies to a well planted tank and wait. they will figure the rest out

I breed them for fun, for as Paul stated they take ages to grow.
But in a small planted, unheated tank they'll still reproduce fast.
Just do some wc every 2 weeks.
Small tank will give small guppys.
But in my case they've become pets instead of food.

If you live in a warm/hot country like SA you can breed them outdoors in a big plastic container. They will grow fast and reproduce fast.

I was considering breeding guppies in my soon to be spare 55 gallon and came upon this site - thought I'd pass it along.

www.guppies.com/ (click on the "breeding" link)

after doing a few minutes of research, it seemed to me not to be worth the trouble and am considering other fish for the spare 55 instead:)

Its very easy to breed guppies. smallish tank (80L+)with 2 males 4 females(shops will sell males/females separate) heat to 22-28c place a dense plant in and away you go. small water changes every 2 wks don't both with making tank anything to nice. need dense plant or something to encourage them to breed. a 2nd tank preferred to move adult fish once you have babies or some/all babies will get eaten. a breeding net/separator will work if you have 1 tank. will breed without heater but will be slower and take longer to grow. to make things cheaper don't bother with a tank get large plastic storage containers. cheap east to move about with breaking them. a lot of hassle for food but like you said you may find it fun and grow attached to them.

I use common elodia or canadian pondweed as dense plants.
They love it and it grows like crazy.
