So I know feeder fish are frowned upon, but are those little ghost shrimp at the pet store ok? The Oscar loves them. They don't carry disease like feeder fish do they?

Shrimp should be perfectly okay, I have had them to my Oscars on occasions and not encountered any problems. I also give them frozen kril as well

I am not sure how much of a meal they would be. The Ghost shrimp that is. I would still quarantine them.

Feeder fish are not really frowned upon provided they are from a good quality source. I normally give feeder fish as an occasional meal. It helps keep my Oscar active and brings him to rely on his natural instincts more often. It is my belief a feeder fish now and then can bring a sluggish Oscar around. The problem with a lot of feeder fish are they are housed in atrocious conditions, which may lead to plethora of different ailments that can be introduced to your aquarium and fish if you do not take certain precautions. I have a separate 10 gallon aquarium that I dedicate to the quarantining of feeder fish. I will purchase twenty or so Rosie Reds for instance and observe them for a period of 7 days. I do this to ensure there are no signs of infection or illness. This gives me time to keep them well nourished, so that my Oscar is getting a healthy well nourished meal. You will figure out your own process. Don't hesitate to utilize the occasional feeder fish. Hope this helped, Have a good evening

i feed them to my oscars and pufferfish and they both seem to really enjoy them. if you have a 10 gallon tank you can keep ghost shrimp just about indefinatly. i would buy 50 at a time and put in that little tank and they last a long time like that. occasionally one would die but id always pick it out with the net and give it to my oscar. i had them mainly for my puffers but they both loved em. i kept 1 small electric yellow in that tank for the longest time till it got big enough to eat the shrimp anyways lol, just to keep the tank's filtration good when i ran out of shrimps.

i had just discovered lately that all my fishes love ghost / grass shrimp,
and it is cheaper as compared to the pellets.... thus, it is now one of the
main feeds i give to them.

Is it pretty easy to breed them if you wanted them for a fresh snack for the O's?
-Come to the darkside...we have cookies!
-I wake up every morning and I piss excellence!
-I'm sorry...I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am!

Very cool! The Oscar definitely loves them, and I got a little 5 gallon with some feeders I've been watching. I have had 2 rosie's die though, and haven't fed him any. I actually like the little whiteclouds better. He eats them whole. The rosie's he usually eats the head, and leaves the rest for me...

The store I go to seems pretty clean. I could ask, or just look at where they keep them, and then I got that 5 gallon to keep the feeders in. Will the shrimp breed??

Donated a 3 gallon to the grade school...2 gallon to my nephew. All with the few goldfish that were too cool to be food.

I acquired these small tanks because we used to just keep a few goldfish as pets for the 9 year old, but then this whole Oscar thing happened...like an un-planned pregnancy.
