I have a new question. I am sure this has been asked over and over. But here it is.
My vieltail oscar started out 2 inches, and is now at least 5 inches long. I have had this fish about a month.
I have no doubt been overfeeding this guy, he still has a lot of growing to do ( it kind of scares me). But looking at all the crap in the aquarium I get even more scared. The trumpet snails are very happy, but things are out of balance.
5 inch oscar = how many Hikari (medium size) pellets per day?
I feed in the morning and evening= twice a day. 3 or 4 times a day on weekends.
I want to put this oscar on a diet, but how much should I cut back.
I guess he is getting 20 medium size pellets per day at this time, this fish still acts like it's starving.
Should I cut back feeding a young fish?

How big/what size are the pellets? 3-4 times a day is way to much, just as much as the fish can eat in 2-3 minutes is recomended.

My oscars vary in size from 5in to 9in and on the days they get pellets they get 4 large hikari pellets each once a day. Takes them no time to eat them. They still grow with this amount of food. Oscar are professional beggars just dont give in to them

You should try to vary their diet. Try maggots, worms, prawns, muscles, krill, lance fish and any insects you can get

my 7 inch oscar gets 2 meals a day one morning meal of whatever pellets i have currently its spirulina and an evening meal of either about 5 crickets (does take longer than 2 minutes on those but only cos i have duckweed and they hide from him on the top )
or prawns 2 or 3 of them go down in a few minutes ten minutes later he is begging for more though just dont give it him as if you let him he will eat all night spit it out his gills(especially pellets) and pollute his water.i sometimes give him some fish from my local supermarket
i think its better to vary the diet they eat than to feed them masses of food but its really trial and error.
its in the nature of most animals to eat when food is available because in the wild it is not always there.

i have an 8 inch oscar and would usually give it about 6 pellets a day.usually mix this with bloodworms and krill on different days but think its best not to give them to much . they always look for more doesnt matter how much you give them
