Can anybody help?Bought 4 baby oscars last week got them home everything looked ok.The day after i noticed little white spots on there pectoral fins,so i went back to the shop told the guy he said to treat with protozin and to turn the temp up to 29/30.Ive got the temp at 29c,and started treating with protozin, the bottle says to treat on days 1,2,3 and 6.Its now day 4 and the spots are still there plus a couple of extra have appeard.Shudnt they be dissapering by now not appearing?Plus 3 still look ok but 1 is starting to look abit off, spending a lot of time at the out flow of the filter.I no there is going to be a drop in oxygen levels,at this temp, so i added a air pump to hopefully boost levels abit.Im just worrying abit now that by friday the oscars still have the white spots,as i dnt want them to endure this treatment much longer. If they still have the spots come friday what would be the thing to do?Hope somebody can help thanks tim.

You should put the temperature up to about 30°C and it can take 10 days. Remember that once you see white cysts on the fish, medication is normally futile. Medication should eradicate the free swimming parasites. The reason you turn the temperature up is to speed up the life cycle of the parasite that is living on the fish.

You've got to be very careful when adding fish to a new tank, this is the reason why you should introduce them gently and not just put them in straight away, you normally rest the bag in the water for at least half an hour so it gradually equalises to the tank temperature. It's very easy for fish to develop ick if there is a sudden change in temperature.

^^^ Yep. I'd just keep medicating but after 7 days do a 25% water change and keep treating. Dont worry, it sounds like you're doing all you can, it'll eventually go away. Mine had white spot when i first got him and he was in terrible shape, but they're strong fish so they should make it!

What is this a test?
Someone is posting questions about (ick) common cold to most people. (advanced) (pneumonia) Fatal Ick is the same with fish, in my opinion. A healthy fish should overcome this disease, without any medication.(heat) is better. Medicine is wrong. If you have a young sick fish, the problem is environment.
The problem I see here is this person has 4 oscars and doesn't understand how fast these critters grow.
In my opinion changing water only worsens ick.(unless your water is trashed) If the fish is in a suitable home. (Lots of water) and places to hide life is good. The fish feels at home.
That is the bottom line
Are these 4 Oscars going to be able to find a place to call home. 200 gallons plus for openers? That will ellieviate (ick)
Just my (humble opinion) Fred

as i just delt with a serious case off ick the other day i can tell you to not get all stressed about it just follow the simple steps that OFL has pointed out and you should be fine my ick lasted approx 12days had the temp up to 30deg all the time and added alot of aquarium salt and vac substrate evry 3days.

i did also add meth blue and ill tell you this that i will never use meth blue again as it colors everything blue incl yr silicone and its stays there for long till 2day my tank still looks rather bad with all those blue stains.

good to hear the icch has gone but dont be tempted to bring your tank conditions back to normal keep treating the tank for at least 3days after the ich has gone.

oscars grow at least 1inch per month so keep an eye on them as i have one thats grown 2inches in 5weeks.

White spot is soooo common. I have bought fish from a LFS and checked their tanks before purchase and seen no sign of white spot, then the fish develop it when i have got them home, probably in the LFS tanks but no visible evidence yet. All the LFS round my way wont sell fish if they have visible signs of white spot so i dont really blame them. Interestingly i have never had white spot in any fish added to my discus tank - reason the temperature is 30c
