TOPIC: Feeding shrimp???

Feeding shrimp??? 2 years, 4 months ago #74677

I just got back from the supermarket with "litopenaeus vannamei" aka whiteleg shrimp.... Its froozen right now being thawed out slowly.

Im just wondering is this shrimp safe to feed my oscar? If so then how do i feed it? Do i need to heat, boil it? Do i need to take of its shell? Wash it or what? lol sorry for so many questions!

These were super cheap shrimps!!!!

Also im deciding if i should buy a new pack of cichlid gold or the BIO GOLD? Is there a big difference? Is it worth it? Is there really micro organisms in the food wouldn't it die of being dry? Any of you use this food with good results?

shrimp should be ok...not sure on those ones thou, never heard of them dude...others will know.
i always feed my 2 with live shrimp that i breed but thats a diff story hey.

as for the pallets i us both the bio-gold and normal gold only diff for me being mine like sinking food and the bio-gold only come in floating as far as i know.

plus i find my oscars dont want to jump out of the tank with the sinking type as they have to chase it down but with the floating they hit it from underneath and breech the water a bit hitting the lids.lol

another tip if your oscars do do this then if you feed them in diff parts of the tank each time they wont jump..dont know why but works for me and others iv talked with.

great food thou..cant go past it.

goodluck dude.

shrimp fit for human consumption should be more than good enough to feed to your oscar.

lol its bound to be better than some of the sun dried mystery shrimp of questionable age you see sitting around in a dusty can on the shelf at the pet store.

not just o's paul! you know your aro?? that light red fringe around the edge of its tail??? i started feeding krill to my bichir a week ago to weed it off of live feeders... and since i started feeding that, its getting the same looking red fringe on its tail. i think it looks pretty great

The place where I am living I am able to buy tiny shrimps which are generally sold to fishermen to be used as bait. They are about 1cm in size and of course at that size I don't imagine or intend to take the shells from them all, my Oscars devour them! but it is interesting to see that after digestion of the shrimps the waste coming from the oscars is exactly the shell of the shrimps, the nutrition from the insides are digested and the rest is excreted. So I would say that if the shrimps are considerably larger than the size of the anus of the oscar then I recommend that you peel them first.

i would not bother doing it.... my 3 oscar knows how to peel the shrimp. whenever
i feed them shrimp, they will always spit out the shell of bigger shrimp

when id feed whole fresh shrimp to my big girl, she bites it on the head, shakes hard, the tail pops off, and she spits the head out and ignores it, then eats the tail, and i have to scoop the head back out of the tank. i think that is more because of the big ass horn on the shrimp head than the shell itself.

lol my bichir eats krills as big around as it is. i think their digestive track can cope with the shells by digesting it.
