I just bought a 20 gallon tank. I want to start a guppy tank. How many guppies can go into the 20 gallon tank????

The tank is basically cycled if i take some bio material from my oscar tank into the 20 gallon filter right? And ill use some water from my 55 gallon oscar tank.

I heard the ratio for guppies are 1 male to every 3 female guppes.

Lets say my max ammount of guppies is 15 can i put in all 15 on the first day? Or will i have to put them in slowly??????

Is it okay to use sand with guppies i have alot of extra black sand aquarium safe. Or are rocks are gravel better?

I already have a breeding net.

though we do not encourage feeders for an o, if it is really your direction,
i would suggest use that tank as your quarantine tank for guppies. breeding
guppies for feeders is not worth waiting for them to grow up before giving
to your o. you will end up with none of them because o can consume before
the guppies could grow up....

quarantine instead of breeding....less hussle and much easier

Yea feeder fish are bad. The reasons why i only feed my oscars guppies are because i hear they have no thiamanese in there bodies.

Also i think im just going to have a guppy tank. Im not going to feed it to my oscar until my tank becomes over crowded.

But isnt putting in to many fish at once going to destroy my fish cycle and the bioload will be so high in such a short ammount of time?

guppies can survive even in the murkiest swamp, the reason why they are being used
in cycling tank... plus they are very cheap.... when i was a boy, we had to poison
the paddies with tobacco to get rid of them, otherwise, you won't have enough food
for the fishes you raised.

Just a bit of usless info for yaz...did you know the female guppies can give birth up to 3 times from the one male incounter...crazy hey.
glad we not like guppies.lol or we whould all have 3 times as many babies from the fun on the wkend.lol

Did try to breed sum for my oscars but like paul says you whould need a complete breeding set-up multi tanks just to keep up with you oscars needs.lol
I go buy 5 guppies at 8dollars and they get 2-3 each on saturday morning thats it and this is just to keep them as active as i can as pellets dont try swimming away, dont want to end up with one of those petshop oscars that are lazy.lol

yeah iknow iknow we arnt all blessed with cheap places to get fish most lfs will sell just one for 4.50 so i dont complain well i get them for less than that.
plus where i go i know they are healthy and dont quarintine at all once home.

it depends on the guppy breed actually.. in my place, feeder guppies costs around 40 cents(USD) a piece and a good breeder pair could go up to USD100 a pair.
i dont think the guppy spawn rate is good enough to support an oscars diet. they dont breed as fast and as efficient compared to platies.
