Ok so I'm aware that frozen bloodworms is rather popular with a lot of people. I personally can't justify $5 for a pack of maybe 20 cubes of bloodworms.

Being the cheapo I am, I decided to buy live bloodworms and preserve half of them by freezing them in a little tray that use to hold the square pieces of gum.

My question is, is it ok to freeze the blood worms like that? Also I hear that dropping the frozen cube of blood may cause problems with an Oscar's digestive track and I was wondering if should thaw out the worms before throwing it into the tank.

i used to freeze my live grass shrimp and feed them to my fishes every day.
i don't see why not for the live bloodworm....it is easier to thaw live frozen
than those in cubes already. just my two cents opinion.

i can't see why you can't buy live blood and freze them yourself.

It must take you weeks to pick each one out and freeze it

Oh no! That must be an absolute nightmare to freeze bloodworms singularly! haha

I meant that i would use a gum tray like this
(this is just a random picture i found online to help people visualize) to keep the blood worms frozen in a cube form. But of course i cleaned it before i used it.

lol $5 for 20 days of feed if you give one a day
doesn't seem to be to expensive to me, i have 4 tanks and use 2 cubes PER tank every day and all 4 tanks they are gone within a minute,
how much are you actually going to save freezing your own? is it worth the effort?
i am in the UK and i think average price for them is £1-50p-£2

i always soak our cubes in water before dropping them in the water, numerous fish have then more chance of getting some, a cube dropped in could be swallowed by one greedy fish

Haha I guess so but my idea is that I can buy an ounce of live bloodworms for a dollar. And with one dollar I can creat maybe 30ish cubes from it so it seems more cost effective for me but I will agree that I'm rather cheap . Well greed isn't really the issue for me I only have one Oscar but I'm just scared about messing up my oscars digestive track.

i give mine cubes of bloodworm, i just dangle them in the tank til they come get them lol.. they eat them still pretty much frozen really, although if this has been proved to be a problem i will start thawing them out..

I just make sure they get a cube each.. plus i only feed them this once or twice a week at most..

I was told never to feed any frozen foods to my fish.
always defrost first.
I couldn't tell you why, though...

I dont feed my oscars bloodworm because they are too expensive (as you have found out) and also because when defrosted they are too small for a large oscar to bother with.

When feeding my oscars i defrost any frozen food before feeding. I figure that they wouldnt get frozen food in the wild so while should they get it in my tank. However saying that i know plenty of people who have fed frozen food without getting any problems
I can't get no sleep

normally ppl would buy bloodworms in cubes for convenience. u can cut out a cube from the whole pack and defrost it to feed ur fish, instead of defrosting the whole batch everyday which is not hygienic. bloodworms go bad really fast. 4-5 hours in room temperature and they will turn blackish and smell bad. but since ure making home made cubes for them, it should be okay, but a gum cube might not be enough for one serving. besides, u need many gum trays to hold an ounce of worms.
bloodworms are suitable for small oscars, but i dont think it is practical with larger ones. u can get larger live food to feed.
i always defrost b4 throwing into the tank. i want to minimize the temperature shock when my fish goes near to feed.
