TOPIC: Help!!!! Sick Oscar

Help!!!! Sick Oscar 5 years, 1 month ago #793

I have a Albino Oscar that the last 3 days has been laying on the bottom of the tank not acting like himself. He is about 2 years old. He is laying sideways and is not breathing right. I am really afraid I am going to loose him. I don't know what is wrong or how to fix the problem. Can some please help me out?

I don't even know what I am looking for right now. He is losing his scales and just does not look right. When I feed him he perks up and comes flying up to the top of the tank for food but then floats back to the bottom and lays at a 45 degree angle.

Okay, I really can't advise anything until I know what your water parameters are. You need to test for ammonia/nitrite and nitrate and probably PH at the same time.

When I know the readings, I can then try and help you find out what's wrong.

What size is your tank and what sort of filtration have you got? How often do you carry out water changes?

Lay off live fish, that's the easiest way to pass on the disease to your Oscar. I would only ever advise someone to feed live fish if they breed them themselves.

Okay, you of see can't give me any information at the moment. Have you got any test kits? These are vitally important, it will tell us exactly what the water condition is. Oscars will become ill if the water is not in good condition.

Like I said before, we are stuck between a rock and a hard place at the moment, I couldn't possibly try and diagnose a health problem without knowing those readings. If you can do them as soon as possible and then post them, we can try and help. I have to warn you that fish are notoriously difficult to diagnose so I can't promise a successful diagnosis.
