TOPIC: how many days till they act normal

how many days till they act normal 2 years, 3 months ago #79325

Hi im new to the oscar field but not new to other species.

ive just introduced two hefty sized oscars to my 40 gallon breeder.
usually with other fish they will get over the shock pretty quick.
but not my oscars is this normal?

but my question is how many days should i really leave them alone?

i did have the water tested they said the water is normal on all aspects for fish.

i put feeder fish in there my oscars seem afraid of them?

if someone could help me answer my questions thanks.

When you say 40 gallon breeder, you mean a 40 gallon aquarium? If so, that isn't even big enough for one Oscar, let alone a couple of Oscars.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings but you will have an uphill battle to maintain water quality if you keep these fish in a tank of that size for any period of time.

To answer your question, you really should only introduce the amount of food that you want your Oscars two eat at that particular time, you shouldn't really just the food in and just leave it in there, whether it is alive or not. In your case, any extra fish will only add to your problem.

its not a regular 40 gallon tank its an extra wide 40 gallon and its for now until i can afford a better tank its made for big turtles and such i just bought it for the extra space for the oscars. and you didnt answer my question ive seen people with 25 to 30 gallon tanks and their two oscars are fine. so my question again is how many days till they act like themslves from the pet store where they were in a smaller tank?

true, u really need to upgrade if u r keepin these 'hefty' oscars in such a small tank.

if your planning on keeping them both u need, i.m.o, a 120 gal tank.

if u cant do this u need to start thinkin about re-homing both oscars because if u dont the current tank u have wont even house one as ofl says.

okay, first of all, theyre right. ur tank is too small for 2 oscars. oscars hav different personalities and also different level of tolerance. ur oscar might not even get better if the problem is mainly on ur tank size.. even if they do get better, u will experience some problems again within a couple of months when ur oscars get territorial.
where do u see ppl with 25-30 gal oscar tanks? in fish stores? a 55 gal tank is just good enough to keep 1 oscar and prevent it from being claustrophobic. u can keep an oscar alive in smaller tanks with a super filtration system, but once an oscar get territorial, it might attack each other or if alone, it can start jumping out of the tank bcos of small space. yes, u can keep it from jumping out by covering the tank with a tight lid, but even then ur oscar might keep jumping and hurt itself in the process.
