Oscars absolutely love meal worms and crickets. Feed them on a good-quality pellet several days a week, let's say four, and three other days you can feed them on mealworms and crickets, that is what I would normally do.

my fish love meal worms, wax worms, red wigglers, but got freaked out when I dropped a huge night crawler in there. You know how pouty Oscars can get! I usually feed their regular pellets, and in the middle of the day I may add worms to their diet, I always give treats to my Os. Ever since I found out that I can feed them stuff fro around the house, they have been eating frozen peas, bananas and raw shrimp out of the bag!

Some like carrots, but it really depends on how picky your eaters are. Mine refuse to eat peanuts also. lol.

My O only ate mealworms, earthworms, bloodworms, crickets and bugs.
Now last month he satred to eat Hikari pelllets and now he eats those everydaY
Like the Boss said, vary between the worms and the pellets, so your Oscar keeps eating pellets and does not refuse them.
They can get spoiled very easily.

I have to admit that the mealworms disgust me; however for the pleasure of my Oscars I bought some..... a few questions about the:

how do you store mealworms?
I bought some at my LFS in a plastic container with oatmeal type stuff in it and holes in the top. Should they be stored in the refrigerator or at room temperature?
How long will they last?

room temp is best and that will keep them good for some weeks, if they're freshly bought.
If you put them in the fridge the turning into pupae will slow down.

I often put the box inside the hood of my tank, just to get them changing,
My O LOVES those beetles that come out of the worms very, very much.
Mine will eat the worms from my fingers and will mistake my fingers for worms as well.!

breeding mealworms is rather easy and works well it takes some time and what not, if you get like two tupperwear dishes one that is long and what not and then as they go from worm to pupa you leave them in one and then move the beetles to the other dish and add a slice of potato to it and then you just wait for the babie and make sure you give it about an inch of oatmeal and boom weeks go by and you will have a few worms and just keep it up the process and you will get a ton i do that with my bearded dragon. Its great and cheap it cost me 200 meal worms from the store.
I have lost my mind be back when I find it, maybe.

Thanx, and i will try that when the weather gets a little better.
1,25 a box is not too much money in a week but on a yearly basis, that may be worth the try!

Lately i was thinking about how much money is spent every year on diff sorts of fishfood and it's actually quite an amount.I gotto list those foods sometime, for the last time i had over 25 sorts of fishfood.lol

And i'm gonna try an earthworm bucket in summer, like i think TonyT suggested.
My fish will be so happy!

I've thought the same thihg......when I got my O's in October 2009 I started a log of foods purchased and how much $$ (to my horror, I've kept that same log for equipment, etc.!) I'll keep a running total and in a year post how much it costs to feed a pair of O's for a year. I figure it's not as much as I spend a month on dog food
