I just noticed a white colour around the edge of my Tiger Oscars tail and fin, I googled it and found a pic that looks the same and its fin rot. Whats the best way of fixing it?

Fin rot, if you are sure that is what it is, is a bacterial infection.

You need to make sure that water peramiters are correct. And then treat the tank with a med that is for bacterial infections. Also remove all carbon from your filter. Carbon will remove the meds prematurely.

Keep in mind that meds like Melafix, and Premafix will cause your Oscar to stop eating for a few days.

Thank you. I am quite sure it looks just like the pics I googled, Its around the edge of his tail and top fin. Its turned white and almost see through. The fish its self has changed colour a wee bit. My water has been a little off colour over the past few days I have done a water change today and will again tomorrow, can I over do the water changes? sorry for my ignorance as I am a newbie to fish keeping so this site is invaluable to me. There are many different sort of meds that will cure fin rot- im in the uk and i use myxazin. Just follow the instruction and remove any carbon you have in the filter (dont bother putting it back- put more bio media in instead)

It doesnt sound like you have fin rot. Fin rot makes them turn black. the ends of my o's fins are white as well.

We do need that pic, fin rot rots the fins. Do the fins look uneven (some missing). Dont confuse fin rot with fin nipping (from another fish)

fin rot usually starts with pin sizeed holes in the fins towards the ends and you will find big pieces missing on the tail, as well as the top and bottom fins.i have seen fin rot on oscars before and 3 little holes turn to one big one and keeps spreading.give them some meds as soon as possible.I heard that aquarium salt will cure fin rot and other bacterial infections butt some people dont like to use salt.good luck

the fins are looking a wee bit tatty but no holes, I treated the water any way to be safe and it has had no effect on my little mates behaivour. He/She is happy as larry. I did add salt to as my local fish person said this would aid his scratch on his head to heal. So all is good with my little Oscar he is loving his new bigger tank and I am now looking forward to getting him/her a friend in the next week or so.
