TOPIC: My O Bullying My Pleco... Should Separate?

My O Bullying My Pleco... Should Separate? 2 years, 1 month ago #88681

Just today about 3 hours ago, I fed my O and Jack. Then I put 2 slices of cucumber in the tank between the gravels. For some reason it seems to weigh down the cucumber and keep it there (First time feeding cucumber ) . I turned off all the lights and went downstairs. I came upstairs after 2 hours and turned on the nightstand light so and shown it to the tank a little. I could seed my pleco eating the cucumber which I was so excited about. But then, my O came and attacked the pleco. I mean tried to bite the pleco. Then my pleco ran to the side of the tank. While the pleco was minding his own bussiness sucking on algae on the glass, my O came to bite at the pleco again. Then, my pleco went behind the filter. After a while, my pleco went to the other side of the tank and the pleco tried to bite it again. My pleco went back on the gravel to eat the cucumber but was later attacked by my O again. My pleco went to the side of the tank again. Then the O attacked again and my pleco went to the heater and stayed there. That's when I got on the computer and decided to post this up Sorry I had to go in so much details. All that just happened in the past 30 minutes from when this was posted . So do you guys think I should separate them? I really don't want to buy a new tank. It costs way too much money. But if I have to... I'll see what I can do. Btw the pleco is an albino chocolate pleco which is very shy and is about 5-6 inches where as the O is 4-5 inches. I really think my O got bigger in the past month since I got him and might be 5-6 inches since it seems the same length as my pleco.

It is a guessing game at this point Hun... If you feel you need to separate, then do it... I would leave them for a bit, as long as no damage was done. Chances are the bullying was due to the new food in the tank...

Keep an eye on them.

Wasn't expecting a reply so quick . I never seen my O try to bite my pleco only because my pleco never moves that much during the day. But today I just happen to want to watch them and saw this happen. I just don't want my pleco to be scared. I'm really leaning towards getting a new tank because what if the O gets like a feet big and the Jack gets bigger. It would be chaos in there. Also, I would have to get a new tank anway cuz of my cory catfish which is 2.5 inches big and soon to be Oscar food. I really want a pleco so that it could clean the algae off the tank but my pleco is a pussy when it comes to other fishes taking advantages over it. Do you think I could get a common pleco from Petsmart and let it live with the oscar and Jack. I heard common plecos don't take shit from any other fish.

I have a 75 gallon and planning on probably getting a 55 gallon for the pleco and catfish. Since 55 gallons seems to be the cheapest and most popular on craigslist. I know common plecos get big and takes a lot of shit. But I might get an extra filter. Also, before they get any bigger, I could always get a bigger tank since I would have more money by the time the O and Jack and pleco gets bigger. But right now I don't have the money. Got to help my brothers and their car stuff.

Well just keep in mind plecs are poop machines... But in my experience, the common is no different than any other plec as far as standing up for ones self!

I know that from when I got first got my pleco. It shitted like crazy. The doodoo was like a feet long and everything. It went around my heater and therometer. You could see it on the gravel but that's just like the first 2-3 months. Then it stopped shitting a lot. I guess it was from all the algae my tank had when I first had him. From what I heard the kind of pleco I have is the shyest one. It won't come eat after a while and will run away if you come to the tank most of the time. I used to think plecos were all the same but I guess I was wrong .
