Hi all
wondering if any one can share some advise
I have two oscars
one sadly went blind in one eye about a year ago but it has never give him any problems and has always carried on a normal active healthy life.
But I've noticed over the last few days although he is still very active and healthy
he is going for his pellets as normal but is snapping for them to soon and completely missing
he doesn't give up and does want to eat

Was wondering if they are any better foods for him to see and catch
he doesn't come to me so I can't hand feed or help him

do you think he maybe going blind in the other eye???

All temp n water is fine and my tank is perfect as I've had everything checked
like said he isn't ill or sick neither is his mate

just seems to be finding it hard to catch his food

I just thought it was weird as he has never had any problems with being blind in one eye before now

many thanks to anyone who can answer

laura

Firstly welcome to the community.

I have got an Oscar that seems to be blind in one eye. Whether or not he sustained an injury to his eye I really don't know but it has gone totally cloudy. When this first started happening he was very reclusiveto feed and would hideaway at feeding time and didn't really feed for a week or two. Anyway, he slowly got used to being able to only see out of one eye and now has no problems feeling whatsoever, he does have to angle himself so he can see the food but he gets just as much as everyone else now. If your O is having trouble seeing then you certainly don't want to make it harder for them to catch their food so I would definitely stick with pellets and food that isn't going to swim away from them. if you suspect your is going blind in the other eye and this is going to be a little more serious as I don't think they will be able to feed properly if they cannot see. Oscars rely on eyesight to find their food.

Poor water quality is normally responsible for eye problems, either this or a poor diet. So I would strongly advise you to get your own test kits, test the water and give us the results that we can see for ourselves.

Hi thanks for your reply
his sight was lost due to water but as said it was a year ago now
I have the water tested every month to be safe ever since
the same as you he has a angle when gettin his food
it was only last week I treated them to river shrimp and he had no problems at all catching them and eating the lot
it has only Been last few days
I did have to get his attention so he knew where the pellets was being placed in tank
other then that he has no problems
until now

you do need to test your water for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate so we can check your water is good- post the actual results please

It does sound like your oscars second eye is getting bad. As OFL says an oscar blind in both eyes is it serious trouble.

I know the water is fine as I take to my local pet every month

I tried muscles today as I know they sink
my pellets don't
and he got them without a problem

very strange ????

I am knew to the site and I invested in an API Master Test Kit. Ebay about £26,99 if I remember correctly and it will do 100's of tests for u only takes a couple of mintues to do it. U just have to wait 5 mins for the results in the glass test tubes which are supplied for all four of the tests.

Some LFS will sometimes tell you your water is good when we would disagree, thats why we ask that you post the actual results

The good thing is that your fish is eating, either he isnt keen on your pellets or is eyesight isnt good and he is having trouble seeing the pellets on the surface

Try him on some sinking pellets and defrosted frozen prawns, maggots and worms
