TOPIC: does my oscar have fin rot?

does my oscar have fin rot? 4 years, 4 months ago #9186

i just got a baby oscar yesterday and it was the most healthy and active looking one in the tank. Then i got it home and put the bag in the tank to assimilate it and i realized a white line on his fins all of them except the first part of the top fin. It slightly looks natural but everytime i look at it it looks like finrot to me he is either a red oscar or a tiger oscar. i think it is a tiger oscar it is black with alot of red right now but my friend said they change color and it may end up a red oscar. Is it natural coloration or does it have fin rot. If it has finrot i would like to use a natural remedy like salt what kind of salt is it that you would use for that does it work?..(by that i mean the salt remedy. if not what else would be good?) thanks in advance for your help

Okay, without seeing a good photograph, it's very difficult to say if your fish has got fin rot, if indeed it has. A fish's fin is extremely delicate, they can get damaged very easily and often do. People often think they're fish as that this condition when they see damaged fins. I've seen some of my fish with fins that are almost shredded. They have always healed very nicely.

Fin rot is caused by bacteria infection which can be brought on by the poor water conditions. Make sure that your water is in good condition and do some water tests, ammonia, nitrite, nitrates and pH. Please post the results for us.

Like I said before, please post some photographs. I have got some fish health books with some very good photos of fin rot.

Yes, pic would be good.

Oscars do have a bright edge on their dorsal and caudal fin though, especially young ones. Sometimes it's more eye-catching, sometimes not, depending on their mood and colouration. So might be just that. If the fins look frayed and the tissue like dissolving a bit, then it might be fin rot.
Like Penn said, a pic could help.

I suspect that what your are seeing it just the natural colouration of the fins of your fish. But fin rot is what it says, so if you have it your can expect the fins to start to get smaller and rot and decay away. If the fin stays the same and doesnt look like some is missing then you are probably ok. As said before a pic would help

Finrot is a common disease in aquariums so if u google it you will find millions of diffrint ways to get it to heal.

lots of people use meds and weird stuff,me personally i like to stay of the meds as long as possible general rule of thumb 4 me is to do alot of water changes and treat it with salt if it doesnt seem to heal within a few days ill go onto meds.

there is a good possibility that i is only color on the oscars fin.

post a pic 4 us to see then we should be able to give u a more defnit answer.
